Label/Format: Harvest – first issue with no EMI logo and ‘The Gramophone Co Ltd’ rim text. These have matt surfaces with a very gentle trace of texturing.

Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and still attractive with only quite light and equally fine spindle marks.. This came from a very carefully played and looked-after collection of records.

Rarity: Moderate: first issue copies harder to find, especially with a record that still offers top sound. This is one of the cleanest audio copies I have heard for some time. Most fans and collectors will know how difficult this album is. Much of the music and effects are quiet, only a top pressing and carefully played copy will ever offer the sound fans really want.

Brief Artist & Album Info: Arguably Pink Floyd’s most underrated and often under-appreciated work, ‘Atom Heart Mother’ was a brave experimental piece. Partially written with avant-garde composer, Ron Geesin and produced by Norman Smith and beautifully engineered by Alan Parsons. It featured the first in a series of impressive album covers, designed by the Hipgnosis studio, none of which featured photographs of the band on the front. The album’s first side is taken up with the title track broken down into six segments. Brass, choir, strings and sound effects are used throughout including a high powered motorbike near the beginning which roars from speaker to speaker, also horses and a high-speed train – all interesting for the audiophile listener. But away from effects, the epic track stands alone as a superb piece of work, it remains a favourite of mine within the Floyd catalogue. Uncommercial and a little out-there, exactly the sound I preferred from this band. Side two offers four songs, the first three gentle more familiar period pieces. ‘Alan’s Psychedelic Breakfast’ is pretty strange however – a ‘Full English’ with a difference. A highly challenging record with so many quiet passages, many first issues written-off from less-than-worthy, basic record players of the time. The hugely complex sound and grooves ruined by basic heavy-tracking record players of the 1960s and beyond. Overall, this copy plays superbly with hardly anything of note unwanted. The lack of irritating crackle and surface noise makes for one of the best examples I have heard – I will rarely buy a copy of this title without being able to hear it first. Even the cleanest copies can disappoint with surface noise and invisible pressing sounds which this lightly played copy has avoided. The cover is as uncompromising as the record and prone to all forms of wear and ageing, again this has survived in really lovely condition with scant clues of vintage. Overall a pre-EMI original to please many fans of the legendary progressive rock band.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(+): an unlaminated gatefold format with matt, smooth surfaces. Printed and made in England by Garrod & Lofthouse Ltd, includes the correct ‘first issue’ text inside ‘7010 TPS Printed and made by Garrod & Lofthouse Ltd Patent no 943,895 SHVL 781’ [as seen in close-up]. Also the Harvest promotional inner sleeve.

Cover Front: One of the most famous covers within the Pink Floyd catalogue, and in the rock genre as well. It is very wear-prone and seldom seen this attractive. Being honest, the front has hardly anything of note to fault, the lack of rubbing, creasing and grubbiness are all huge pluses, as well as no sticker issues for which this is unforgiving. Any discolouration to the pale blue sky area is little and light, the famous cow cover looks superb as-seen. This challenging and uncompromising front sets a very high standard.

Cover Back: Largely the same with only gentle traces of rim impression or darkening around the record shape. The lack of ugly penetrating ringwear is a major plus on this very thin card original. Any rubbing, marks of blemishes few, small, light and faint. This side will also prove hard to find better.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Superb with barely anything to fault. Note the close-up of the imprint text on the bottom left edge. This correctly states: 7010 TPS Printed and made by Garrod & Lofthouse Ltd Patent No. 943.895 SHVL 781. Later printings, which appear almost exactly the same omit parts of this text.

Top Edges: Both straight, flush, flat, clean and unworn, rarely seen as such.

Bottom Edges: Similar again with possibly the least wear I have seen on these storage edges. A small rub on the back edge right corner, but not a great else.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean and incredibly sharp with barely any wear or thickening. Record enters on the back edge, all are guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced in any way.

Spine and Text: This original cover has the thicker spine that has a more rounded style of finish. This is solid, straight with minimal compression, a gentle hint of left tilt being critical. Folded square, so the edges meet up very closely together and parallel. There is minimal wear or ageing to the vulnerable edge, any traces of ink loss or text clipping is very small and light as-seen. So the fragile text matt is mostly present and well-centred for good measure. Both folds have avoided scuffs or rubbing, again that a major plus on a cover that rarely avoids often major wear.

Corners: Moderate tip rubbing only on the back, bottom right tip, elsewhere, very little and light with excellent shape retained. No knocks with hardly any tip creasing at all. These perilous corner areas have fared very well indeed.

Cover Summary: One of rock’s most recognisable and famous covers, and seldom seen this nice with only scant clues of age. One that has been cover-protected for most of its time, resulting in the lack of wear even to the most vulnerable areas. Indeed this original could prove a major upgrade for some, overall, it should please many, if not most collectors and fans.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(++): and as close to Near Mint as they ever get. Apart from traces of seam adhesive darkening, this gives few clues to age, even this is bordering on minuscule. Like the main cover, this Harvest promotional inner sleeve is one of the most famous from the era and rarely seen this clean and fresh. Barely creased and the polylining solidly intact with no edge splits or repairs. When the original inners are seen this clean, it usually bodes well for the record inside, and it does.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): a superb visual original that is still very clean with equally fine shine and solidly pressed. Even under bright angled light, any surface marks or traces are very few, fine and faint. There are no penetrating stylus scratches and the record superbly pressed, thus sound is very impressive and clean. Unruined by worn stylus, all that incredible sound fidelity intact and crisp. Bought by one owner from new who owned a quality system, this appears little used with due care. I have rarely, if ever heard a first issue format copy sound better. Knowing this vintage Pink Floyd album well enough to know the perils it faced around time of issue, this copy excels. I adore this album, but too uncommercial for some – give me the early albums any time over the more user-friendly later ones, this is as haunting, captivating and a little ‘out-there’ as when first issued. This wonderful band for me were at their absolute best when being more experimental and groundbreaking. Visually a lovely vintage record that should please many, if not most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This pre-EMI first issue plays for most all of its entirety above it’s visual grading with very little to fault. It offers strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is typically very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound with no tracking issues*. Beautifully produced and engineered, any surface sounds are minimal and faint, hardly any for a typically challening prog album with its fair share of quiet passages, total silence is nigh-on impossible. But, at last a first issue copy that does this fantastic album nigh-on maximum justice. Few, if any originals will play ‘silent’, that is an immense task on what is one of the most challenging and difficult Pink Floyd albums. So the odd sporadic tick or blemish is almost to be expected, especially if played on more sensitive equipment. But little heard on this fresh cleanly pressed example. I enjoyed this immensely and its one I can strongly recommend – overall, all elements of set are impressive.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
