ATOM HEART MOTHER FIRST PRESS - STUNNING VINYL
This is the very rare original UK first press of Atom Heart Mother released in 1970 on Harvest Records and of course is the only pressing without the EMI logo on the label. This is without doubt one of the best first presses I have seen and heard of this classic LP, if not the best. Side One plays so well it could almost be graded as Mint. There is barely any background noise and it plays with such clear audio it belies its 45 years of age. The audio is quite simply stunning and I have played it through completely. The worst I can say is that it has absolute minimal crackle in a few places but it might even be harsh saying that! It was a real pleasure in listening to this classic track with such fantastic audio I honestly believe it would be difficult to hear a better copy on any pressing let alone a first press.
Side Two plays in similar fashion. There are just a couple of small pops on 'If' but apart from that it plays clearly with hardly any crackle at all. 'Summer '68' and 'Fat Old Sun' play as near to Mint as you will possibly find, the audio plays with such clarity, simply stunning. 'Alan's Psychedelic Breakfast' plays superbly with total silence in the quieter passages, no background interference at all. So often the ending plays with some distortion but not on this first press. Of course this is the rare first pressing where the drip at the end continues into the runoff groove so you would have to remove the needle from any manual turntable.
Visually the LP has some extremely faint hairlines that can be seen under a very bright light but quite honestly I am running out of superlatives to describe the quality of the sound on this LP. I am sure the hairlines have been caused by sleeve removal. It is without doubt the best I have ever heard and has a superb gatefold also. With no pops or clicks and barely any crackle it is a true archive copy and if any serious fan is after a first press that plays as near to Mint as you will find then this is the one.
Matrix numbers A-1G & B-1G // Stampers 1 MT & 2 OT
Play tested on my Technics SL-J110R turntable system
The Garrod and Lofthouse gatefold is in fantastic condition for its age. You find so many first presses have had their covers swapped but not this one. In the lower left corner it has '7010 TPS Printed and made by Garrod & Lofthouse Ltd Patent no 943,895 SHVL 781'. It barely has any wear at all it is that good! There is very slight creasing top right hand corner and absolute minimal rubbing on the edges. The edges and spine look 'as new' with no shelf wear - it has obviously been very well looked after. The front and back cover are clear of marks and is extremely clean. The inside of the gatefold is in wonderful shape also, it just has a few very light marks at the top of the spine but not that visible really. Still probably the best first press cover I have seen. The yellow/green labels Harvest labels (no EMI logo) and with 'The Pink Floyd' above the green Harvest label are in Mint condition with no spindle wear at all.
It also has the original white inner sleeve and has 'Patent Nos 1,125,555 & 1,072,844' at the bottom. It is advertising other Harvest releases including 'The Madcap Laughs' and 'Ummagumma' amongst others. It just has a little creasing and a few faint marks on but no splits or tears at all.
This is a truly wonderful first press. Please be rest assured that this is probably the best first press that I have heard and would be a great addition for any collector to add to their collection.
