Animals A2/B3 (2nd Press)

This very early pressing plays with stunning quality overall.  This album only has mother numbers and no stamper letters on the run out grooves.

S1 is in immaculate condition and looks barely played judging by the stunning glossy sheen.  There is some spindle wear, although not a great deal, but there are no obvious hairlines at all and has always been very carefully handled.  S2 is equally as good except for two very small 'fade' marks on 'Sheep'.  Again there is a little spindle wear but as detailed below the audio overall is of a 'high end' standard.  The run out grooves are super clean with no marking.

Play grading  

'Pigs On The Wing P1' has 2/3 light clicks on the intro and a hint of barely audible static on the first 15 seconds and then has audio of stunning, the clarity is stunning.  There are a couple of minor ticks in the dead wax and 'Dogs' then plays to a 'high end' standard and even the many quiet sections play with an incredible depth and no obvious 'background' at all.  Rarely have I heard an A2 side plays as clearly as this and the more I listen to it the more I am amazed by the astounding clarity and warmth of the music.  The majority of it easily grades as Mint- and all I heard was a handful of mega light ticks that are in no way intrusive.  The louder end section always plays with some distortion on the top end and whilst there is some here it does not particularly intrude on the quality of the listen.

S2 begins with very little lead in static and all you hear on the quiet 'Pigs (Three Different Ones)' intro are a small number of light clicks and some static and then it plays as Near Mint for the majority.  There are some intermittent static sounds but the music still plays very clearly and there are certainly no clicks or pops.  There is a little static on the quiet 'Sheep' intro and on one of the later quieter sections where it is a little more obvious but the remainder plays superbly well with very little 'background', just some static on the fade out.  The louder end section is very impressive in that there is very little distortion on the top level.  'Pigs on The Wing P2' ends the LP with some light static on the intro and then impresses with excellent audio and no without any clicks, pops etc and is a fabulous end to an often underrated album.

The Gatefold

The G & L gatefold has some rubbing around the edges and a little fading near the top of the front cover but is certainly better than so many you see.  The wide spine is in excellent order and is still 100% legible.  The corners have some rubbing/creasing but the opening edge is very clean with a minimal amount of handling wear.  The inside of the gatefold is very clean with only a little fading and a few small creases around the edges and some wear at the bottom of the spine.  The back cover is in excellent shape with just a little fading near the spine area.

Lyric sleeve

This has the rounded corners as per the first/early pressings and is beautifully clean apart from one split on the bottom edge.  Otherwise there is no marking or creasing which is very rare.

The labels

They are in perfect condition with no marking/writing, just some spindle wear but not very much.

Play tested on my Pro-Ject Essential III Turntable / B&W 684 Speakers
