Description
A NICE PAIR
This double LP from 1973 features the first two LPs released by Pink Floyd in 1967 and 1968, 'The Piper at the Gates of Dawn' and 'A Saucerful of Secrets'. This first pressing has the picture of Dr W.R Phang's dental surgery which was very soon replaced with another picture (gargling monk) as Dr Phang objected due to dentists not being allowed to advertise. This gatefold cover is highly collectible due to its rarity and this one has to be the best I have ever seen. It is in immaculate condition and can almost be graded as Mint. The vinyls are also amongst the best I have heard also.
Visual grading
The vinyls are in lovely condition, very clean and retaining a glossy shine. There are some fine hairlines with a few more on Side Four. In saying that you would be hard pressed to find better vinyls than these. As my playgrading below confirms the audio is of a very high standard.
Play grading
I have playtested both vinyls in their entirety and the audio is of a very high standard. On 'Piper' there is no lead in static on either side suggesting the vinyl has been played very little. You can barely hear any static across both sides and there is complete silence between tracks. The audio is stunning for over 40 years old and plays with incredible depth and separation. There is perhaps a little distortion on the 'higher end' but that is common with this LP. In saying that 'Interstellar Overdrive' plays superbly well even on the louder sections.
'Saucerful' plays with a little more static but is very much in the background and not obtrusive in any way. 'Set The Controls...' in particular plays in stunning fashion with minimal static. As is always the case 'Corporal Clegg' does play with some distortion. The intro to the title track on Side Four is amazing with no interference but then does have 4 pops about two minutes in. Thereafter the audio plays with fantastic quality especially from when the organ begins right through to the end. The sound is impeccable with almost no background noise. The remainder of the side plays very well also with very little interference.
Gatefold cover
This gatefold is in absolutely amazing condition with hardly a fault to speak of. The edges and spine are in superb shape and the front, back and inside of the gatefold is in pristine condition, I have never seen a cleaner one. There is just very minor creasing on the top right corner on the inside of the gatefold but honestly it would be nigh on impossible to find a better one. It has the wow factor! The opening edges are also wonderfully clean.
Picture sleeves
The picture sleeves are in fantastic condition with no splits or tears which is incredibly rare considering their age and the fact they are made of paper!
Labels
The labels are also in stunning Near Mint condition.
