Label Conditions: Both in super condition: very clean and highly attractive with just a tiny few, ultra faint and small spindle marks, only faintly visible under light.

Cat Number: 2383-045.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 129 grams. [These days, many modern Audiophile reissues are pressed on super-heavyweight 180 gram vinyl. Only a small percentage of ‘vintage vinyl’ was ever pressed this heavy. Records pressed in the 1960s averaged around 140 to 150 grams. Records pressed in the 1970s were usually lighter and averaged more around 115 – 125 grams. Some records pressed around 1973 were very thin and light due an oil crisis and shortage around this time. Some records were even issued on recycled vinyl from this period and sounded poor with crackle and surface noise evident from the very first play. If any record I buy is deemed ‘recycled’, I will never offer it, I have a very simple test to detect these records if I suspect this to be the case other than audible imperfection. Some records from this period were even pressed on other materials the most notable was ‘Dynaflex’, used by RCA around this time. Although inferior to vinyl, this at least mostly sounded reasonably acceptable but pressings on this material were wafer thin and flimsy. Beyond the 70s, records often became thinner and lighter still but most played fine but were never quite the quality as from the ‘Golden Era’]. (This was based on ‘average’ weights for 20 records from these eras. Later pressings were usually lighter still).

Rarity: The first-made editions of this album that had different packaging are rare. This is a ‘standard’ cover copy but still early with the A1/B1 matrixes, these are still moderately scarce but not as elusive as the PVC cover editions that were far more limited.

Brief Info: Debut and arguably best album from these acid rockers. Lik similar type bands, Edgar Broughton and Hawkwind etc – they were popular at the festivals of the early 70s and were a popular cult band. Being honest, not the best recorded (and often pressed) record ever made, with a slightly flat production, this sounds best played with more volume. Then it really does come alive and the great music within is more than ample compensation. An album I have had several times, as a standard issue, and it often crackles, the later pressed ones especially. This has practically nothing unwanted and this early pressed example with the standard packaging will prove hard to find much cleaner and better sounding.

Cover Grade and Format: EX (or very close to). A single fully laminated format that was printed and made in England by MacNeill Press Ltd.

Lamination: Front & Back: Overall, a very pleasing cover visually, the only minor issue is a scuff on the top edge near the spine that is just visible on the back. This area is very small and has been neatly tipped-in. That apart this delightful cover is what you would expect. The laminate is shiny and solid with any non-adhesion very fine on the spine edge and it barely even registers. I have seen this one with very large areas of blistering that does spoil the appearance. Any dulling, mostly around the record rim shape, is only really seen with angled viewing. A few light surface creases that again show little and the lack of marks or scuffs is good news. The artwork looks very nice indeed and retains real freshness. If the very small edge scuff enhancement is an issue, do not bid, but this really is pretty minor.

<Top Edge: The left was rubbed for around a couple of inches and has been tipped-in so it now shows far less, in fact little. A record case abrasion being the likely cause and this being the only noteable blemish on what is a lovely cover. The rest of the edge is perfectly fine.

Bottom Edge: Almost as made.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, quite sharp with little wear and no feathering or trimming. Very minor burr traces when viewed end-on, this being quite critical. Record enters on this edge.

Spine and Text: Solid, quite straight with any compression minimal and mild. All text is perfect and unworn under the solid and unpeeled laminate.

Corners: The top right has a smallish tip rub, the others even smaller and fine to very fine shape is retained.

Cover Summary: A strong all round example of this colourful 70’s cover, one that will prove difficult to find significantly better. With blemishes and wear only slightly and mild, this should please many collectors but not the perfectionist of course.

The Inner: The original Polydor-style lined inner is included in fine condition. Some mildish ageing and some ruffling but the edges infact with a superbly clean window. This is date coded 0672 which proves this is still a pretty early example and this is guaranteed the original that came with the record.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EX, at the very least. A superb visual copy that is very clean, shiny, intense black and solidly pressed. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence and any surface marks or blemishes are very few indeed, simply three or four the faintest and inconsequential paper scuffs that have NO effect on sound and one or two equally faint hairlines. Visually a super record that should please many, if not most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippetts or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This excellent record plays up to its high visual grading with practically nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is as good as it gets, not the highest of fidelity productions being honest, but as stated above, volume, and a slight increase in treble (if you amp has tone controls) helps. Production is nothing I can do anything about, but I can, and do offer ultra clean sounding records. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and no clicks were noted. Just one pop on the quiet intro to ‘Track One Side Two’, yes that IS the name of the song, was noted. This is an exceptional clean pressing for a record I have often heard that crackles. Few copies will outperform this early pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been clearly carefully handled. Practically nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this lovely old record. This copy will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT neccessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
