PIERRE HENRY – Mass for The Present Time ORIG Philips LP / 4FE 8004 (UK, Stereo, 1968)
Here’s the original 1960s press of this seminal LP, featuring the classic ‘Psyche Rock’ and ‘Jericho Jerk’, 2 tunes that were subsequently remixed and remodeled by Fatboy Slim among others during the 90s dance era. There’s some crazy early electronics on this LP with Side 2 particularly predicting the electronic uneasiness of bands such as Throbbing Gristle or Nurse With Wound. Side 1 is a more groovy affair with some superb swinging 60s funky beats.
The fully laminated single sleeve is a strong example with no splits, tears, writing, no real ring impression and good edges. Just one crease to the front top right and some rubbing evidence and slight soiling to the rear. Overall, a pleasing VG+ (Very Good Plus).
The white Philips labels are perfect, no issues and no spindle evidence.
The sharp light to medium weight vinyl is a beauty – no scratches, hairlines, embedded dirt or nasty scrapes. Possibly some super faint sleeve scuffs if you look very closely but it really does look next to new. Grades M- (Mint Minus). HAS BEEN CAREFULLY LISTENED TO and apart from the occasional dust tick, plays just fine with no snap, crackle or pop, no distortion or loss of clarity. Great and very strange listen!

I do not use any more than ONE plus or minus between grades. After all, WHAT ON EARTH DOES VG+++++ MEAN? What is NM+? Or EX---? These are just some of the ridiculous gradings I’ve encountered on eBay. I am very careful using the EX (Excellent) grade. Excellent, by dictionary definition means‘extremely good’ NOT ‘marked and slightly beat up with wear’!
