Background -

Salvatore Accardo (born 26 September 1941 in Turin, northern Italy) is an Italian violinist and conductor, who is known for his interpretations of the works of Niccolò Paganini.

Accardo studied violin in the southern Italian city of Naples in the 1950s. He gave his first professional recital at the age of 13 performing Paganini's Capricci. In 1958 Accardo became the first prize winner of the Paganini Competition in Genoa.

He has recorded Paganini's 24 Caprices (re-recorded in 1999) for solo violin and was the first violinist to record all six of the violin concerti by Paganini. He has an extensive discography of almost 50 recordings on Philips, DG, EMI, Sony Classical, Foné, Dynamic, and Warner-Fonit. Notably, he has recorded an album of classical and contemporary works in 1995 on Paganini's Guarneri del Gesù 1742 violin, Il Cannone.

Accardo founded the Accardo Quartet in 1992 and he was one of the founders of the Walter Stauffer Academy in 1986. He founded the Settimane Musicali Internazionali in Naples and the Cremona String Festival in 1971, and in 1996, he re-founded the Orchestra da Camera Italiana (O.C.I.), whose members are the best pupils of the Walter Stauffer Academy. Some of the most famous pupils are: Vincenzo Bolognese, Alessio Bidoli, Myriam Dal Don, Francesca Dego, Federico Guglielmo, Sergej Aleksandrovi? Krylov, Gabriele Pieranunzi, Laura Marzadori, Massimo Quarta, Sonig Tchakerian, Anna Tifu, Marco Misciagna and Anastasiya Petryshak. He performed the music of Paganini for the soundtrack of the 1989 film Kinski Paganini. In the 1970s he was a leader of the celebrated Italian chamber orchestra "I Musici" (1972-1977).

After he was a student in Accademia Musicale Chigiana in Siena, he taught there from 1973 to 1980. In 2004, he came back to Siena, and now he teaches in Accademia Musicale Chigiana.

Accardo owns one Stradivarius violin, the "Hart ex Francescatti" (1727) and had the "Firebird ex Saint-Exupéry" (1718).

Available recordings of Vivaldi's 12 concerti op 7 are not thick on the ground. Selected concerti are included as part of other sets, but choices for the entire opus are limited. Op 7 has never gotten the attention of op 8 (containing the "four seasons") but the concerti of op 7 are nearly as compelling in my opinion, particularly in the hands of great soloists and a band with Vivaldi in their DNA.

These recordings by I Musici, with soloists Salavatore Accardo (violin) and Heinz Holliger (oboe) display both attributes in spades. The recordings were made in 1975. While maybe not displaying the same cutting-edge tempi as the most recent competition (Federico Guglielmo and Il Arte Dell'Arco in the new Brilliant Classics Vivaldi edition) they are still very very good. If you see this set for sale I wouldn't hesitate to grab it. In comparison to Guglielmo's wonderful re-recording of all the numbered Vivaldi opuses 1-12, many of the I Musici recordings from the '70s are sounding decidedly stodgy. This opus, however, does not. Heinz Holliger was in his absolute prime in the 70s and no further proof is needed than his work in Vivaldi's fast movements. In contrast, Salvatore Accardo was at his absolute best bringing out the soulful cantabile lines of the middle movements in these concerti. Despite having a very modern (2014) rendition of op 7, I will be holding onto these for their sheer beauty. There are just some evenings when you need a more soulful approach to Vivaldi with a glass of nice vino while watching a sunset…..-John K. Gayley

CONDITION Details:

The 2-LP box is in near mint minus condition! The box has NO splits or crushed corners - just gorgeous! The corners and seams are solid with just some light shelf wear. The colors on the box are sharp and clean (see pictures with this listing as they are of the actual item).

The set comes complete with a large format paper insert/libretto.

The 2-LPs are in near mint minus condition! We found that the vinyl looked superb on this vintage LP set. There are no significant marks and the LPs retain much of the original gloss and sheen - obviously well taken care of! They do have a bit of dust and perhaps a finger print or two on them so they should be cleaned before playing. There are NO serious spindle marks on the record labels either. Just beautifully made vinyl! That said, acquiring a vintage LP like this is for the performance and rarity of the LP, not necessarily for the sound quality.

A Short Note About LP GRADING -

  • Mint = Only used for sealed items.
  • Near Mint = Virtually flawless in every way.
  • Near Mint Minus = Item has some minor imperfections, some audible.
  • Excellent = Item obviously played and enjoyed with some noise.
  • Very Good Plus = Many more imperfections which are noticeable and obtrusive.

For best results, always thoroughly clean your LPs before playing them.

LPs can be audiophile quality pressings (any collector of fine MFSL, half speeds, direct to discs, Japanese/UK pressings etc., can attest to the difference a quality pressing can make to an audio system).

Don't let this rarity slip by!!!
