Great rarities for the Phil Ochs connoisseur.

A hot weekend in July...Phil Ochs, feeling pretty depressed, is being asked to do a set at Gerdes. Despite his misgivings, he comes to the club and checks the scene. The first night, he makes a tentative step in the right direction, coming on stage during Sammy Walker's set, and singing along on a few numbers, joined by Broadside's editor Sis Cunningham.

The following night...he's willing to give it a try. He calls out for some ice, and begins a very unusual set, where he covers with wistful nostalgia some of his cavorite songs over the years, including obscure folk tunes and country and western medleys. He has good reason to tuck 'Chords of Fame' into the set, and the look backward to the "Boy in Ohio," but he also confronts "Bwatue," despite the bad memories of his mugging in Africa, and has the guts and skills to tackle his epic, "Crucifixion."

Phil may have been weary but he was never weak, and there are plenty of sparks of the old Phil Ochs here. The sound is a bit archival, so headphones aren't reccomended, it "breathes" better with natural speakers in play.
