Description
PHARAOH SANDERS QUINTET - ULTRA-RARE, FACTORY SEALED! THIS IS AN ORIGINAL1964 ESP-DISK RELEASE!
This copy, one of about 10 of ESP-Disk's first releases (like The Fugs, Sun RA and others) that I received at a progressive FM station where I was Program Director and DJ in 1970! Most of them have remained sealed and in my private collection for more than fifty years!
Pharaoh's album debut was recorded in NYC with, most notably pianist, Jane Getz (played with Mingus, R. R. Kirk, and Charles Lloyd). Jazz writer Scott Yanow reviewed the 90's reissue of this recording on CD in the1998 issue of the All Music Guide to Jazz, (putting some 'fresh' ears on it!), and said it "sounds remarkably like John Coltrane on "Seven By Seven," as he had not found his own musical personality yet." He found the track, "Bethera" a "bit more distinctive and overall this historic set should greatly interest fans of both Coltrane and Sanders."
Of note: three corners of the cover have very, very slight dings.
