Label/Format: Charisma – original pink scroll format with matt, smooth surfaces. This has the B&C credits and the record pressed by EMI (which was usually better news for this label).

Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive with only a tiny few spindle marks that only show under angled light. Also very well pressed by EMI with no inherent pressing rasps or distortions, also minimal traces of any surface noise which can never be taken for granted.

Cat Number: CAS 1037.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 137 grams. A good solid weight for this time.

Brief Info: ‘Fool’s Mate’ was the first ‘solo’ album by the Van der Graaf Generator stalwart and founder Peter Hammill. This is a highly elusive and top quality album issued at the peak of his band’s output. It features a back catalogue of songs with backing by VDGG and includes King Crimson’s guitarist and leader, Robert Fripp – in all tense and purpose, it is another VDGG album but with slightly less intense shorter songs – it works brilliantly. It received great reviews on issue and even named one of ‘Melody Maker’s albums of the year. However, sales were hardly major and this has always proved quite a difficult one to find. This a very fine all-round example and well pressed by EMI – most of any cover wear on the edges. Any fan of the classic early VDGG albums are sure to treasure this superb first solo album.

Cover Grade and Format: NEAR EXCELLENT: mainly due to rubbing on the storage top and bottom edges. An unlaminated gatefold format with matt surfaces. The outer areas being textured and made more vulnerable to wear, the inside is smooth. Printed and made in England by the E. J. Day Group, includes original plain inner sleeve.

Cover Front: Superb artwork by Paul Whitehead, famous for early Genesis covers, this front has very little wear, especially for one clearly prone to all forms of it. Clean, fresh with lovely colour and very little-aged or worn. Just traces near the very edges, but the general lack of speckle (rubbing to the raised textured surface) is unusual and welcome. Quite delicate card with a surface like this, hugely prone to sticker pulls and tears which here has been totally avoided. This one is very attractive indeed.

Cover Back: The back is largely the same again, the lack of ringwear a massive plus. Again traces of edge rubbing, mostly near the bottom right corner on the fold that is moderate but fairly small. Both sides have hardly any creasing at all, again very hard to find as such.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Superb, little to fault at all.

Top Edges: Moderate, very slightly patchy rubbing, this the most wear on this fragile cover.

Bottom Edges: Mostly moderate and a little more patchy rubbing, less than above. All edges are straight and sit together flush, so that is a plus point.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, quite sharp with little wear. Any thickening or burring minimal and light as seen viewed end-on. Record enters on the back edge, both guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced in any way. The front totally sealed.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight with minimal compression with any tilt only light. Folded square, so the edges meet up very closely together and parallel, that always a bonus for better neatness of any gatefold cover and more than worthy of mention. No text was printed on this one, the graphic wraps around and largely still present without major fading. One very small deeper rub and some lesser general rubbing nearer the top fold, but overall this is a highly respectable spine.

Corners: Moderate rubbing with fine to very fine shape retained.

Cover Summary: This is a hard cover to find without wear, the edges are hugely prone. A strong all-round example of this very colourful early 1970’s cover, one that could prove difficult to find much better. With most of any wear on the edges, this beautiful designed cover should please many collectors. A real quality work-of-art with the main four faces superb and a solid spine. Perfect ones may exist or show up (VERY) occasionally, but I cannot hold my breath that long.

The Inner Sleeve: A plain white unlined inner, little aged with a little mild crinkle, gentle creasing. But all edges unsplit with no repairs, grades close to excellent.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(+): a superb visual copy that is very clean with fine shine and very solidly pressed. A copy that appears hardly played with any surface traces tiny, super fine and faint as seen with utmost scrutiny under bright angled light. Visually a very impressive record that should please many collectors again.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This top-quality prog-rock album plays up to it’s high visual grading and mostly above with very little to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this is an exceptional clean pressing, especially for a pink Charisma record where clean sound was sometimes a lottery. Any surface sound minimal, very infrequent and faint, traces on the odd very quiet passage but few will better this. The odd gentle sporadic tick or crackle trace on a quiet passage is nigh-on impossible to avoid, but nothing of any real note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. This early copy has the loud and dynamic electronic sound looped ending on side two that goes into the run-out grooves. Both record and cover will prove difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended unless perfection is mandatory – and good luck with that on this challenging set.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
