Brief Info: After working with Cream, Jack Bruce and his departure from The Battered Ornaments, Pete Brown quickly assembled a new band in Piblokto. An attempt to make more commercial music, but this fared little better than his first album on Harvest and is equally, if not rarer still. The cover is a work-of-art in its own right, with many famous faces drawn on both front and back – many will be more than familiar if you look closely. It did little to drawn attention, and this almost sunk without trace like many others from the early Harvest catalogue. Famed for his surreal lyrics and eccentric performances, this is Brown in a more ‘relaxed’ mood. Overall, a very fine example with a lovely shiny clean cover, one moderate crease one the back. The record appears little played and most plays superbly well. There are some mainly very gentle and light sporadic ticks on the final song here-and-there, so not perfect. But with rarity in mind, sometimes a little give-and-take has to be given. Many collectors are sure to enjoy this elusive and quality album.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(+): the moderate rear laminate crease aside, this would have easily earned the second (+). A gatefold format with front and back lamination. The inside is smooth and matt finished. Printed and made in England, uncredited. Includes the Harvest promotional inner sleeve.

Lamination – Front & Back: The front looks superb, the back has a moderate laminate crease near the bottom left corner, that apart, of the same quality as the front. It retains fantastic shine, freshness and clarity with no lifting. Any dulling is very gentle and light as seen critically under angled light, it really is minimal for a cover this age. Any other creasing is very little and light – a small one on the bottom right front corner tip, and a couple of small half moons on the back. Deep colourful artwork that looks amazing on a cover that is seldom seen.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Little to fault inside, the black and white unprotected artwork is still clean with minimal hint of marks, grubbiness or set-off.

Top Edges: Straight, flat, neat and flush with no scuffing or wear.

Bottom Edges: A very small surface crack/rub on the back central edge (no card split). Little else to fault.

Right Edge(s), and Type: The closed front edge has hardly any hint of wear and is mostly straight and neat. The back storage edges are also very sharp and crisp, any thickening or burring minimal, these are largely straight with any ‘curl’ minimal. Both front and back laminate end-lines are seen with the fine exposed strips both present and generally neat. No trimming or enhancements.

Spine and Text: A fantastic spine which is thick and robust and solid. Still straight with no compression or crushing, also folded square, so the edges meet up very closely together and very close to parallel. No text printed on this one, the graphic flows around almost perfectly intact. Just a little minor rubbing to the very top and bottom.

Corners: As stated above, a little minor rubbing to the spine ends, also a small chip to the back bottom left tip. Any other corner wear is minimal and very light. Very fine to excellent shape largely regained with no bashes and minimal hint of any dinks.

Cover Summary: A rare Harvest vintage cover in very fine condition, bright deeply coloured with fantastic artwork – this really should have drawn more attention. This beautiful item should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT: also in very pleasing condition with far less ageing than most seen these days. Yes this Harvest promotional inner sleeve has a little darkening of the seam adhesive areas and the odd tone spot or two, but not a great deal else. The polylining still intact, minimal creasing and no edge splits or repairs. Just enough to politely remind its around 46-years-old.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: NEAR EXCELLENT: side one even better. A very fine visual copy that is very clean with equally fine shine and very solidly pressed. A copy with modest plays on all the evidence with any surface marks very light, fine and faint as seen critically under bright angled light. Viewed in normal room light, little is seen, very gentle surface scuffs are seen on side two, but are superficial. As stated already, some sporadic gentle ticks are heard here-and-there on the final song from tiny fine marks seen with a magnifier. Whether in the pressing or not – not sure being honest, but only close scrutiny reveals them. So a few audio blemishes on this song, and not for the absolute purist who want ‘perfection’ at any cost. Visually still an impressive rare original record that should please many collectors needing a copy.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This elusive Harvest album plays mostly up to or above it’s high visual grading with little to fault. But as stated above, some sporadic mostly light clicks were noted on the final song, just here-and-there – hence, ‘sporadic’. It offers strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface other contact sounds are minimal indeed and overall, a very fine clean pressing with no tracking issues*. Few available copies will outperform this very early pressing significantly I feel sure – this is one that surfaces rarely, and sometimes a little compromise has to be made – this is still a lovely copy – but for absolute perfectionists. So if a little ‘contact’ sound is acceptable, this will please, and to be clear, the vast majority plays superbly anyway. Little spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this rare album. It will still prove difficult to find significantly better and can be recommended to many (slightly less critical) collectors.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams.

The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my new VPI-17 Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
