With their first, self-titled album for Liberty, The Petards from the state of Hessen in Germany had produced a real hit. The year 1969 meant for Klaus and Horst Ebert, Roger Waldmann and Arno Dittrich above all a wealth of appearances, at that time there was probably no band harder working in Germany than The Petards.
In September 1969 producer Sigi Loch called the band back to Munich's Trixi Ton Studio to record the next album. And as one would expect from the band, the musicians came to the studio well prepared. Within five days, enough new songs were recorded to create four singles in addition to the new album. All the titles were written by the two Ebert brothers, who apparently never ran out of ideas. The musicians used whatever kind of tools the studio gave them: synthesizers, Mellotron and piano were skillfully integrated into the Petards sound. As with the previous albums, the band captivated with an enormous amount of variety and talent. Progressive rock, Krautrock - everything was in the Petards songs - and yet with less than four minutes of running time they remained deeply suitable for airplay.

In early 1970 the new album 'Hitshock' was released on Liberty and continued the track of success of the four Hessians. For many people 'Hitshock' is the most mature and best produced album of the four from Schrecksbach. Fans and critics agreed.

In April 1970, The Petards made it into the arts pages! Director Charles Lang had selected the band from 70 applicants and invited them to the Bremen Theatre. There they took part in the play 'Was ihr wollt', freely adapted from Shakespeare (’Twelfth Night’, or ’What You Will’). All arrangements were made by the musicians, some titles were rewritten. Unfortunately no recordings have been preserved. The play was not a great success, but The Petards got off well with the critics, and of course this also meant a good promotion for their new album. At least the four musicians had a lot of fun participating, but still they found time to carry the songs from 'Hitshock’ live through the republic.

Bear Family releases this album for the first time again in the original artwork on 180 gram vinyl and adds a reproduction of the original poster to 'Hitshock'. This record is the third of four scheduled vinyl re-releases of the great Petards on Bear Family.

Mit ihrem ersten gleichnamigen Album für Liberty hatten The Petards aus Hessen einen echten Wurf hingelegt. Das Jahr 1969 bedeutete für Klaus und Horst Ebert, Roger Waldmann und Arno Dittrich vor allem eine Fülle an Auftritten, es gab zu dieser Zeit wohl keine fleissigere Band in Deutschland als The Petards.
Im September 1969 rief Produzent Sigi Loch die Band wieder ins Münchener Trixi Ton Studio, um das nächste Album einzuspielen. Und wie man es von der Band gewohnt war, kamen die Musiker gut vorbereitet ins Studio. Innerhalb von fünf Tagen wurden genug neue Songs eingespielt, um daraus neben dem neuen Album noch vier Singles zu gestalten. Sämtliche Titel stammten aus der Feder der beiden Ebert-Brüder, denen die Ideen scheinbar nie ausgingen. Die Musiker setzten an Instrumenten ein, was das Studio hergab: Synthesizer, Mellotron und Piano wurden gekonnt in den Petards-Sound integriert. Wie bereits bei den Vorgängeralben bestach die Band durch ein enormes Maß an Vielfalt und Talent. Progressive Rock, Krautrock - alles steckte in den Petards-Songs, und trotzdem blieben diese mit weniger als vier Minuten Laufzeit zutiefst radiotauglich.

Anfang 1970 wurde das neue Album ‚Hitshock’ auf Liberty veröffentlicht und setzte den Erfolgskurs der vier Hessen fort. Für nicht wenige ist ‚Hitshock’ das reifeste und am besten produzierte Album der Vier aus Schrecksbach. Da waren sich Fans und Kritiker einig.

Im April 1970 schafften es The Petards dann auch ins Feuilleton! Regisseur Charles Lang hatte die Band aus 70 Bewerbern ausgesucht und an das Bremer Theater geholt. Dort wirkten sie mit bei dem Theaterstück ‚Was Ihr Wollt’, frei nach Shakespeare. Sämtliche Arrangements stammten von den Musikern, einige Titel wurden extra neu geschrieben. (leider sind keine Aufnahmen erhalten geblieben). Großer Erfolg war dem Theaterstück nicht beschieden, aber The Petards kamen bei den Kritikern gut weg, und natürlich bedeutete das auch eine gute Promotion für ihr neues Album. Den vier Musikern zumindest machte die Teilnahme nach eigener Aussage großen Spaß, trotzdem fanden sie nebenbei noch Zeit, die Songs von ‚Hitshock’ live durch die Republik zu tragen.

Bear Family veröffentlicht dieses Album erstmals wieder im Original-Artwork auf 180 Gramm schwerem Vinyl und fügt eine Reproduktion des Originalplakats zu ‚Hitshock’ bei. Diese Schallplatte ist die dritte von vier geplanten Vinyl-Wiederveröffentlichungen der Petards auf Bear Family.
