PERFORMANCE (MICK JAGGER/NICOLAS ROEG): OST 1970 UK WARNER 1st PRESS Nr MINT

SOUNDTRACK TO THE GREATEST BRITISH FILM OF THE 70s

PERFORMANCE

ORIGINAL UK WARNER BROTHERS (WS 2554) FIRST PRESSING (1970) OF THE SOUNDTRACK TO DONALD CAMMELL/NICOLAS ROEG'S LANDMARK FILM "Performance"
BEAUTIFUL COPY - BARELY BEEN PLAYED

A dark, experimental film with the cut-up technique dealing with issue of identity crisis which included graphic depictions of sex, drug use and violence.
Warner Bros. studio executives, who believed they were getting a Rolling Stones equivalent of the Beatles A Hard Day's Night, denied the film a cinematic release.
Performance was finally released in 1970 after several recuts and changes but is now cited as a classic of British cinema.
The lyrics of Memo From Turner were re-written for this film and different to the Rollings Stones version on their Metamorphosis LP from 1975.
According to Colin McCabe (in his book Performance) the Moog synthesizer was so new that none were commercially available and a prototype was used for these recordings in 1968 by Bernie Krause

PRESSED ON HEAVYWEIGHT VINYL WITH THE FIRST ISSUE ORANGE WB LABELS, "MADE IN ENGLAND"
MATRIX: WS 2554A-1 * T / WS 2554B-1 * T
THE RECORD IS HOUSED IN THE ORIGINAL FULLY LAMINATED SLEEVE "Printed and Made by Garrod & Lofthouse Ltd."

Even in an era of cinematic experimentation, Performance stands out as a visually daring major-studio film that deals with questions of sanity and identity rarely touched on in mainstream filmmaking.
The elements of Performance certainly looked attractive to studio executives at Warner Bros. -- a gangster on the lam hides out in the home of a reclusive rock star -- especially since that musician was being played by Mick Jagger of the Rolling Stones.
But co-directors Nicolas Roeg (who also photographed) and Donald Cammell (who wrote the screenplay) had much more in mind than a walk on the wild side of swinging London.
Chas (James Fox) is a sadistic thug who gains our sympathies only because men even crueler than he are out to kill him. After Chas arrives at the mansion occupied by Turner (Jagger) and his female companions Pherber (Anita Pallenberg) and Lucy (Michele Breton), what looks like a decadent idyll fuelled by drugs and group sex turns into a series of mind games in which Turner challenges Chas' sexual preference and core identity.
Even the film's one musical number, "Memo From Turner," is a William Burroughs-like monologue in which Turner fantasises taking over Chas' role as a mobster, spewing insults to his colleagues.
The film's cult status has been fuelled by subsequent films of its co-directors (for Roeg, Walkabout, The Man Who Fell to Earth, and Don't Look Now; for Cammell, White of the Eye), which explored similar themes employing the same kind of jagged editing and striking visuals.

LABELS: NEAR MINT
Immaculate labels - clean, bright and unworn with barely a spindle trace to be seen
VINYL Visual: NEAR MINT
Both surfaces retain their original deep glossy sheen, are practically unmarked and shine like new
VINYL Audio: NEAR MINT
Superb copy - barely been played.
My play-check at loud volume revealed just a few light background 'ticks' (very minor and non-intrusive) otherwise, sensational sound throughout.
Not only a wonderful record in its own right but a fascinating document of the time (recorded in 1968 but not released until 1970)
SLEEVE: NEAR MINT
Lovely condition - crisp and sharp with little wear to speak of (just a soft bend to the top corner), a deep, deep glossy sheen to the laminated surfaces front and back and a crisp, clean spine with all text clear and bold

ALL RECORDS ARE PACKAGED WITH THE VINYL OUTSIDE OF THE SLEEVE TO PREVENT ANY 'KNIFING' DURING TRANSIT
