PERE UBU – The Modern Dance. Fire Records FIRELP 360. UK release. FACTORY SEALED NEW VINYL RECORD ALBUM. Originally issued in 1978 on Blank Records (sub label of Mercury Records). This remastered edition issued in 2018. Debut, underground punk art rock or avant-garage (or both) from the Cleveland area.

DESCRIPTION:  Formed in 1975 with additional guitarist Peter Laughner. Laughner left the group in 1976 after their first two singles and died soon afterwards of acute pancreatic failure on June 22, 1977. The band would go on to have a variety of long-term and recurring band members, with singer David Thomas being the only member staying throughout the band's lifetime. They released their debut album The Modern Dance in 1978 followed by several more LPs before disbanding in 1982. Thomas reformed the group in 1987, continuing to record and tour.

 

For this reworking, Paul Hamann at Suma has transferred from the original 2-track analogue mix tapes to digital at the highest resolution available which, is at least four times the resolution of the original. The tracks have carefully been re-mastered by sonic architect Brian Pyle so as to capture the unique qualities within.

 

Describing their sound as "avant-garage," Pere Ubu's work drew inspiration from sources such as musique concrète, 60s rock, performance art, and the industrial environments of the American Midwest. While the band achieved little commercial success, they have exerted a wide influence on subsequent underground music. If you are new to their music, this is a recommended starting point and then work through their catalog chronologically. Check out some of David Thomas’s side projects too. When I first heard this album in 1978 it recalled the spirit of Captain Beefheart and The Hampton Grease Band; outside inside music. All good company as far as I’m concerned. SIDE BAR:  With the song Sentimental Journey, on this album, began the practice of re-appropriating titles from well-known popular songs:  Pere Ubu's Sentimental Journey has no obvious relation to the Doris Day hit song of the same name. Something interesting to pick up on as you become aquainted with the band’s catalog.

All LPs are removed from their jackets and placed outside of the jacket for shipping. If an album comes sealed (and will be noted as such in the above description), it will be shipped whole unless you request that I open it up to place the disc outside of the jacket for shipping. Both jacket and disc are placed inside of an outer plastic sleeve before packing for shipping. I use professional corrugated record mailers with inside packing.
