DESCRIPTION FROM CRUCIAL BLAST:
The new vinyl version of Pentemple's improv-metal orgy 0))) Presents comes in an awesome black sleeve with the hoof/crown artwork embossed into the front of the jacket, the record (180 gram black vinyl) inside of a full color inner sleeve, and the whole shebang machine-numbered out of 2,000 copies.
Like that Ascend album that we listed in the last C-Blast new additions list, this live recording of the one-off collaborative group Pentemple injects what could be considered jazz elements into dark, droning sludge/doom, and the result is pretty goddamn fantastic, provided that you've got an ear for completely improvised, tumultous free-sludge that has far more in common with the most freakd-out Abruptum recordings than anything I'd call doom metal.
Pentemple is essentially a beefed-up version of Sunn O))), a pseudonym for the band that combines the core duo of Greg Anderson and Stephen O'Malley joined by their resident warlock throat Attila Csihar, Oren Ambarchi and Sin Nanna from Striborg. The two twenty-minute-plus tracks that make up the performance are titled "Pazuzu" parts one and two, the cumulation of a live performance that took place in May of '07 in Melbourne, Australia as a kind of warm-up session for a concert the following day with Boris. As off the cuff as this is, it's a mighty fog of ritualistic improv sludge that starts off as a swirling miasma of buzzing feedback and detuned amp/guitar rumble accompanied by Attila's ghostly vocal emanations, run through various effects and morphed into a fearsome flow of bestial grunts, shamanic chants, and other wordless utterances. The first six minutes or so play out like this, heavy and dark as fuck and very much in the vein of the darker Sunn O))) recordings and the recent Sunn O))) offshoots Grave Temple and Burial Chamber Trio, an ever-thickening cloud of blackened psychedelic metal murk. But then Sin Nanna sudddenly slices through the fog with an onslaught of furious drumming, an increasingly frenetic percussive attack that pummels and pushes through the rumbling amp mud, very free-jazz sounding throughout. I'm really into hearing this sort of stuff with drums, and even though it's just as abstract and amorphous and syrupy as Sunn O))) sans beats, the busy clatter and rattle of Sin Nanna's relentless improv drumming gives this a delirious urgency that sets it apart from the other performances that I own from these cats. He also contributes his twisted vocals to the mix, combining his signature moans and demented howling with Attila's deeper, more gutteral incantations. The performance moves through clusters of percussive chaos and floating guitar feedback to clouds of shimmering distorted keyboards and cosmic riffs that become more and more melodious towards the end, closing out in a wave of deeply moving space drone that ends abruptly. © CRUCIAL BLAST
