Description
Here is a BONANZA of tremendous Victor sides by PAUL WHITEMAN AND HIS ORCHESTRA. These are some of the most exciting and pace-setting records of his career, influential with every dance band and music lover in the country.
VICTOR 20418: "LONELY EYES" / "WISTFUL AND BLUE." Sonic masterpieces, these sides were recorded in Orchestral Hall, Chicago in 1926, and sound like early stereo - they're NOT, but STILL... Fantastic ensemble, spread all over the capacious auditorium, with hot solos by MATTY MALNECK, and the newly-hired "hot" duo, AL RINKER and BING CROSBY. "Wistful" was Bing's first side with Whiteman. EE- Silent internal crack.
VICTOR 20828: "MY BLUE HEAVEN" The mega-hit song of the DECADE, this record features RED NICHOLS (cornet) during his brief tenure with Paul. The flip side, ROGER WOLFE KAHN'S "ALL BY MY OWNSOME" is also impeccable. Strong E.
VICTOR 20883: "FIVE-STEP" and "IT WON'T BE LONG NOW." Two songs from the current (1927) Broadway hit show, "Manhattan Mary." These are quite rambunctious, agreeably hot, and cross the the line into jazz savagery on "Long," when TOMMY DORSEY uncorks his untamed hot trumpet in the last chorus. He will startle you! Clean E.
VICTOR 21274: "MISSISSIPPI MUD" and "FROM MONDAY ON" One of the all-time great hot jazz records, by Whiteman or anybody. BIX BEIDERBECKE (cornet) saturates both sides, starting with a clarion, epic 32-bar solo on "Monday"; FRANK TRUMBAUER (C-melody sax), IZZY FRIEDMAN (clarinet), BILL RANK (trombone) pop up too, and don't overlook the world-beating vocals by BING CROSBY and the RHYTHM BOYS, with special guest, the winsome and willowy IRENE TAYLOR, on "Mud." Condition: a very respectable EE-.
