Description
This historic recording LP is now 60 years old, it is the transatlantic exchange recording of the iconic Paul Robeson in New York transmitted to The Miners' Eisteddfod at Porthcawl in South Wales on Saturday, October 5th, 1957. There is a message from Will Painter, president of the NUM in Wales of which was to be an emotional evening for all concerned. The Treorchy Male Voice Choir sang "Y Delyn Aur' and completed the concert with "We Keep a Welcome', needless to say it was a very emotional time with many tears in the audience. This recording was the first time Paul Robesons' voice was to be carried across the Atlantic by way of a hook-up direct from New York to the valleys of Wales. He sang Didn't My Lord Deliver Daniel, All Through the Night, The Little Light of Mine, All Men are Brothers, Schubert's Lullaby. Paul joined the miners of South Wales valleys on hunger marches in 1927 and 1928 and in 1940 starred in the movie Proud of Valley, hounded by authorities on both sides of the Atlantic, the singer, actor and political activist formed an incredible bond with Welsh miners. He visited Pontypridd and the valleys many times, he saw the struggles of the miners who were constantly downtrodden, something very similar to the American slavery of which he had been constantly damned for his beliefs. He was one of the raised voices of America who saw the ills of inequality, however he always fought for the right of his countrymen, never forgetting the miners of South Wales who were dear to his heart. The world-renowned film director Steve McQueen, (12 Years a Slave) has announced he is to make a film about his life and the affinity with the NUM and the miners of the valleys of South Wales. He truly is one of the 20th century greats, this is an opportunity to acquire a piece of mining history that surely will increase in value when the film of his life is released in the not-to-distant future!!!
