While Paul (and his former bandmates) certainly "stumbled" onto something bigger than themselves in their universal appeal, there is no doubt that they were greatly aided by writing that was very good, very solid, and (happily for impressionable kids) mostly uplifting. And Paul was a ground-breaking bassist to boot (certainly influencing the likes of Chris Squire and Geddy Lee)!
