By 1975, Patti Smith had been a regular poetry-reader in New York City clubs for years. On her debut album it seemed only natural to set these poems to music and with an exciting rock band to back her, Smith built up a strong following on the strength of the band's thrilling live performances. Horses was produced by ex-Velvet Underground member John Cale, who realised her gift for being able to paint vivid pictures with her prose. This is most in evidence in the pair of 10-minute long epics, Birdland and Land (which consists of 3 sections Horses, Land of A Thousand Dances, and La Mer). Other tracks on the record are more conventional, yet just as gripping, most notably her iconic version of Gloria and other tracks Free Money and Kimberly. Thrown in guest musicians of the calibre of Tom Verlaine of Television and Allen Lanier of Blue Öyster Cult and an iconic cover shot by photographer Robert Mapplethorpe and this album is now considered groundbreaking in more ways than one, and a true rock classic.
