COXON'S ARMY
"Live from Sam Miller Exchange Cafe" in stereo on Trace 1001.
Features Pat Benatar on her earliest LP appearance singing lead of 4 tracks and harmony and background vocals on some others. Excellent sound quality (read below) but not the kind of songs you'd expect from Benatar.
She sings a raving soulful wild version of Respect but tones it down on the jazzy Can't Help Lovin' that Man of Mine. If He Walked Into My Life is more of a pop ballad. She sings background on the first part of Brother Love's Traveling Salvation Show and then turns up the heat as it segues into Yes We Can Can. The LP contains some instrumentals - a progressive bluegrass version of Hoe Down and an all-instrumental (thankfully we don't have to hear about leaving the cake out in the rain) version of MacArthur Park which is almost 7 minutes and begins more or less as a classical piece with prog elements and then turns into a hard rock / prog / classical rocker. The album starts out with a short Theme from Shaft and the second side opens with the instrumental Themes and Variations Unfinished.
Recorded live but with very little crowd noise and excellent, almost audiophile quality, sound. Sam Miller's was an upscale bar in the newly restored (1974) Shockhoe Slip area of Richmond, Virginia.
RECORD GRADE: VG (or better)
COVER GRADE: VG (or better) The corners are worn with dings, the rest of the cover looks to be in very good condition, but does have some wear along sections of the edges.
LABELS: Orange and black custom with a photo of Coxon on the label; looks very much like a 1980's label, way ahead of its time.
About the Album:
This is a 1974 live LP recording made in conjunction with the broadcast of a
local PBS TV special. It features a performance by the band, Coxon's Army.
What makes it interesting is that one of the vocalists is a 21 year old Pat Benatar.
Coxon's Army (Phil Coxon) was the house band at Sam Miller Exchange Cafe, a rather
preppy establishment in Shockoe Slip, then a freshly renovated section of Richmond, Virginia.
Comes from a smoke-free home with no children and no pets.
