George Clinton's Parliament fully arrived conceptually, musically and mythologically, and by the time they reached this, their fourth album in 1975, they were delivering towering milestones in funk music. This remastered edition reignites a record that changed the shape of r&b and helped birth hip-hop, not to menition influencing countless dance genres since. The addition of James Brown alumni Fred Wesley and Maceo Parker tightens the horn arrangements, but the real MVP might be keyboard genius Bernie Worrell, whose space-age synths carry 'Give Up the Funk (Tear the Roof Off the Sucker)', 'Night of the Thumpasorus Peoples' and the cosmic gospel-funk anthem 'Mothership Connection (Star Child. Bootsy Collins, meanwhile, lays down basslines so heavy and elastic they practically bend time. Clinton's cosmic mythology saw funk as a spiritual force to save the world but it's a brilliant metaphor for creating a movement. Beneath the theatrics lies elite musicianship, communal energy and razor-sharp songcraft. Tracks like 'Handcuffs' and 'Unfunky UFO' have an undeniable groove, while 'P-Funk (Wants to Get Funked Up)' shows no signs of aging 50 years later. Glorious, bizarre and endlessly inventive, the origins of cosmic funk are here for all to enjoy.
