Ornette Coleman – Change of the Century is one of the landmark albums in the development of modern jazz and free jazz. It was recorded in New York on 8 and 9 October 1959 and released by Atlantic Records in 1960, with the original album appearing as Atlantic LP 1327 in mono and SD 1327 in stereo.

The album features Ornette Coleman on alto saxophone, Don Cherry on cornet, Charlie Haden on double bass and Billy Higgins on drums. This was the same groundbreaking quartet heard on Coleman's The Shape of Jazz to Come, and the musicians were central to Coleman's radical approach to improvisation.

Musically, Change of the Century is an exciting and sometimes challenging record. Coleman was moving away from the conventional bebop approach in which musicians worked within fixed chord progressions. Instead, he encouraged the musicians to improvise more freely around melodies, rhythms and moods. The result is energetic, unpredictable and highly expressive, with Haden and Higgins providing a remarkably flexible rhythm section while Cherry interacts closely with Coleman's saxophone.

The seven-track programme consists of “Ramblin'”, “Free”, “The Face of the Bass”, “Forerunner”, “Bird Food”, “Una Muy Bonita” and “Change of the Century”. The recordings were made across the two October 1959 sessions, with the album running for approximately 41 minutes.

“Ramblin'” is probably the best-known track and is an excellent introduction to the album. It has a blues and country-like quality beneath Coleman's adventurous improvisation. “Una Muy Bonita” is another particularly memorable composition, while the title track demonstrates Coleman's ability to create music that sounds simultaneously melodic and completely unpredictable.

For a vinyl collector, the original Atlantic LP 1327 is particularly desirable. Early mono copies are collectible, while stereo copies carry the SD 1327 catalogue number. Later pressings and reissues exist, so the label design, catalogue number, country of manufacture, sleeve, matrix/run-out numbers and condition are important when establishing exactly which pressing you have. A 1960 original and a later Atlantic reissue can look quite similar at first glance but have very different collector values.

There have also been later vinyl editions. In 2018, Rhino included Change of the Century in the substantial 10-LP Ornette Coleman: The Atlantic Years box set, alongside other important Atlantic recordings such as The Shape of Jazz to Come, This Is Our Music and Free Jazz

THE VINYL: (The industry standard rating scale)

Mint (M): An absolutely perfect, flawless record. Often unplayed and usually still sealed. 

Near Mint (NM): The highest standard for open records. The vinyl looks pristine with minimal to no visual wear; audio is crisp and flawless. 

Very Good Plus (VG+) / Excellent (E): A highly playable record with only minor signs of use. You may see very light scuffs, but playback remains highly enjoyable with only faint background noise. 

Very Good (VG): Clearly played with noticeable surface wear or light scratches. Expect some surface noise or ticks, but the record will still play without skipping. 

Good (G) / Good Plus (G+): Major visual scuffs and wear. The record plays through without skipping but has continuous surface noise and pops

Poor (P) / Fair (F): Substantial scratches, warps, or cracks. The record may skip constantly or be unplayable; recommended only for collectors for completionist purposes

THE SLEEVE:

Mint (M): Absolutely perfect. No ring wear, creases, seam splits, or indentations. This grade usually only applies to brand-new or still-sealed records.

Near Mint (NM): The jacket is almost perfect. It may have been opened, but there are almost no visible flaws.

Very Good Plus (VG+): Shows minor wear. May have slight corner dings, very light ring wear, or minor creases. There are no major seam splits. but the art remains highly presentable. 

Very Good (VG): Noticeable handling. May have obvious ring wear, creasing, or minor seam splitting (up to a few inches on one edge). Writing, sticker residue, or cut-out marks are common in this grade.

Good (G) / Good Plus (G+): Significant wear. Heavy ring wear, seam splits along most edges, fading, and water damage may be present. 

Poor (P) / Fair (F): Heavily damaged. The sleeve may be torn, heavily water-damaged, or held together with tape.
