redgarnett Store ITEM DESCRIPTION:
This beautiful LP from Philips (A 01138 L, Dutch pressing, plum/silver “Minigroove” label, mono) features Eugene Ormandy and the Philadelphia Orchestra's resplendent accounts of Hindemith's Mathis der Maler and Konzertmusik for String Orchestra and Brass Op. 50.
Both were recorded in the fine acoustics of the Academy of Music, Philadelphia, the former on 1 November 1953, and the latter on 23 November 1952. Ormandy was a commited exponent of Hindemith's music and with the 'Fabulous Philadelphians' at his disposal brings a chrome-plated majesty and majesty to these works. Indeed, the sheer of sound that the Philadelphia strings produce in both works is simply breathtaking in its opulent beauty.
There are superb liner notes (uncredited) on the reverse side of the jacket, printed in German only. The remarkable cover art reproduces a detail from “The Concert of Angels”, the central corpus of Matthias Grünewald’s The Isenheim Alterpiece.
CONDITION:
The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.
The condition of the front laminated jacket is EXCELLENT. There is some minor bumping at corners and and mild shelfwear, but that is all. However, there are no seamsplits, bends, owners' markings, or other defects and the album remains solid, bright, glossy, and highly attractive – overall an excellent collector's copy.
The condition of the LP itself is EXCELLENT. Although the surfaces are not absolutely silent, really this is a fine copy and the playback is enjoyable. Those requiring a flawless or near-MINT copy are kindly advised to look elsewhere. Overall, this is an excellent collector's copy.
