Description
This is an original handbill for Charlie Parker's appearance at the Damon Runyon Memorial Jazz Concert from December 10, 1948. A handbill with Charlie Parker's name on it is a near-impossible find. Appearing along with Bird were Stan Kenton, Buddy Rich, Lionel Hampton, Tommy Dorsey, Sarah Vaughan, James Moody, Billy Eckstine, Charlie Ventura. Freddie Robbins was Fred Robbins, a well known New York City DJ. Proof that Bird was there: Charlie Parker, Billy Eckstine and Charlie Ventura were all headlining at the Royal Roost club that week on 47th Street & Broadway (as seen in the entry from "Bird's Diary" below), facilitating a quick jaunt up to the Ziegfeld Theatre on 54th and 6th Ave, between sets. The handbill measures approx. 9" x 6", was folded twice and is in very good condition thanks to some kind jazz soul saving it for 65+ years. Please click on the scans to get a nice closeup view.
