Description
I'VE BEEN SAFELY SHIPPING 78rpm RECORDS SINCE 1961
OVERALL CHEATER BLUES (L-284-2) and DISCONNECTED MAMA (L-285-1) by Washboard Walter, aka Washboard Walter Taylor, on original Paramount 12991.
The 1963 first edition (BTW, I'm given credit in the acknowledgments at the front of that edition so you can see I've been doing this for years) of Dixon & Godrich BLUES & GOSPEL RECORDS, page 645, suggests that the second voice and guitar music are provided by John Byrd.
D&G ALSO SHOW THAT MY "OVERALL CHEATER" is an alternate take! (They list only L-284-1)
I've listened to several sides by Washboard Walter on the internet and believe OVERALL CHEATER to be among the purest country blues that he recorded. Features fantastic guitar.
I used a grading system I found online some years back from a site called SPIN CONNECTION. I grade both sides aurally as well as visually. I rate this GOOD PLUS for both sides. No skips, no cracks at all, no lengthy scratches and few scratches (aurally) of any consequence at all actually. No chips, no really noticeable needle drops, digs or gouges.
On the other hand, there isn't much original gloss left, both sides have that "gray," rubbed look and the surface noise is constant (starting out a bit louder on each side) and said surface hiss tends to be about as loud as the music when I'm in the same room as the record player. But when I turn the volume up and adjust the tone control, I can go into the next room and hear the music better (with less noise) - especially on OVERALL. I have a simple mono record player (but with a really good needle). Those who have better equipment, including mixers and balancers, can surely get a somewhat better sound quality. (But it may actually sound best on an old VICTROLA with a fresh needle!).
But, for all practical purposes here, the music and hissing are basically the same volume.
OVERALL label looks much better than DISCONNECTED label which means DISCONNECTED was likely played fewer times than OVERALL.
Any questions, please feel free to ask.
If there is a problem I overlooked or did not describe, I will accept returns sent within 14 days of "delivered" date shown on delivery confirmation site for refund (less my shipping) if returned in same condition and carefully packed.
My shipping will be via DOUBLE BOXED priority mail with the record carefully protected by 10x10 inch corrugated boards and good padding around the edges of the record and boards.
Record will be shipped in a 10x10 inch paper sleeve but it is NOT an original Paramount sleeve and may not be from 1930.
Please pay within 3 days. Unless there's a tornado or family emergency, I will ship within 2 business days of confirmed receipt of funds from paypal.
I'M SORRY BUT I DO NOT SHIP OUT OF THE U.S. even though I realize there's a huge market for Paramounts overseas. I once took a $1000 loss on an overseas order and I just will not do that again.
If you have a U S friend or relative to whom I can ship, please write and make a proposal and we'll see what can be done.
