Deep soul singer O.V. Wright's third full length album marked the beginning of his very fruitful collaboration with Willie Mitchell, the man who would soon bring to life the Hi recording studio in Memphis.

One of his few originals takes centre stage here: the gutbucket romper "Gonna Forget About You" features Wright at his sweatiest. Throwing in plenty of right-on-the-mark adlibs, the song also sports the talents of an unknown female singer who joins in on the chorus, thickening the groovy sound of this fast paced beater.

Wright had demonstrated his niche for ballads with Roosevelt Jamison's "River Song" and "That's How Strong My Love Is", and the man churns out another wonderfully, bittersweet vocal on the beautifully crafted, slow burning "I Have None".

An angelic vocal opens the mid-tempo "You're So Good to Me", a fatback strutter which also features the slightest Latin influence.

But Wright is in his element on slow, blues drenched wailers: the remorseful, lamenting "Why Not Give Me a Chance" - which could have done without the intrusive backing vocals - and the devastating, harrowing "I'll Hate Myself Tomorrow" are perfect vehicles for Wright's rough pipes and high-pitched adlibs. The latter is further embellished by an understated, gently grooving horn arrangement. The anguish is equally prevalent on "This Hurt Is Real", featuring some of Wright's most tormented howls.

Xylophones chime in for the classic "Pledging My Love", adding a delicacy to the oft covered tune that, along with Wright's subdued, crooning vocal, makes it stand out.

"I'll Take Care of You" sounds almost sinister despite it's title. Set to a minor keyed, lowdown groove and spiced with raw, darkly bluesy guitar riffs, the song lazily builds itself up for another one of Wright's crescendo finales.

The album concludes with O.V. belting out a final soul opus with "I Want Everyone to Know", with its infectious, descending groove on the chorus.

A splendid album from one of Southern Soul's most pained singers.

CONDITION:

RECORD

(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we  grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL AS EXCELLENT. This is one of those albums that are somewhat difficult to grade. It is somewhere between VG++ and NEAR MINT, just a notch below NEAR MINT. A few light abrasions ARE visible, but they are extremely shallow, superficial  and only moderately visually distracting (nothing significant). For the most part, the vinyl looks impeccable without any MAJOR visual flaws or imperfections. Much of the original luster is intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)          The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(c)           Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·       COVER

THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT VERY GOOD++ (VG++).

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-        Cover has some writing on its back side (name of the previous owner written in blue ballpoint pen, about 1 x 4 inches in size)

-        Cover has a visible "wrinkles"(creases)  in THREE (3) of its corners.

-         Cover has some light ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 2 (front side) and 3 (back side)

-         Back cover has circular tarnish (grayish, dust-covered sections, which closely follow the contour of the record),  probably caused by friction or by rubbing against other covers during the storage. The tarnish is similar in appearance to a common ring wear, but, UNLIKE ring wear, these grayish areas may be possible to clean up with a minor effort and with a right cleansing solution.

-         Cover shows some light yellowing on back side, apparently from aging.

-         Minor shelf wear noted on the seams (nothing significant)

-         Cover has a minor 'bump' (dent) on the paper slick  on back panel (this affects ONLY the paper slick, NOT the cardboard base itself)

-         Cover has two corners slightly worn (nothing significant)

NO OTHER IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER:

-        No split seams

-        No cut-out (drill) holes.

-        No cut-out corners

-        No saw-marks or indents

-        No stamps

-        No peel-off marks

-        No stains

-        No mold or mildew spots

-        No stickers or labels

-        No water damage

-        No razor marks, scratches, pressure marks, lines, streaks, or  cuts.

-        No warping

-        No wax, glue, paint or liquid drops on the cover

-        No glue traces or wax residue.

-        No bar codes

-        No RIAA stamps or stickers.
