Scrooged is a modern, dark-comedy retelling of Charles Dickens' classic A Christmas Carol. Bill Murray stars as Frank Cross, a highly cynical, ruthless, and selfish television executive who cares only about ratings and money, even at Christmas.
On Christmas Eve, as Frank prepares for a live, extravagant broadcast of A Christmas Carol, he is visited by the ghost of his deceased mentor, Lew Hayward, who warns him that he will be visited by three more spirits. True to the classic tale, Frank is then confronted by the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Future, who force him to confront his past mistakes, his current callousness towards those around him (including his loyal assistant and his estranged ex-girlfriend), and a bleak future if he doesn't change his ways.
The film uses black humor and a chaotic tone to portray Frank's transformation from a greedy, uncaring man to one who rediscovers the true spirit of Christmas and compassion.
