The film focuses on the key events of Market Garden, following the experiences of various Allied paratroopers and ground troops. The plan involved dropping thousands of paratroopers deep behind enemy lines to capture several key bridges, including the crucial bridge at Arnhem over the Rhine River. Ground forces were then supposed to advance rapidly and link up with the airborne troops, securing the bridges and pushing into Germany.   

The film depicts the initial successes of the operation, with the paratroopers capturing some of the bridges. However, things quickly begin to go wrong. The Allies encounter stronger German resistance than anticipated, communication breakdowns hamper coordination, and reinforcements are delayed. The battle for the Arnhem bridge becomes a desperate and prolonged struggle, with the British paratroopers facing overwhelming odds.   

The film portrays the bravery and sacrifice of the Allied soldiers, as well as the confusion and chaos of war. It also highlights the mistakes and miscalculations that led to the operation's failure. The film doesn't shy away from depicting the brutal realities of combat and the heavy casualties suffered by both sides.

Ultimately, despite the courage and determination of the Allied troops, Operation Market Garden fails. The advance grinds to a halt, the paratroopers at Arnhem are cut off and suffer heavy losses, and the Allies are forced to retreat, leaving the Netherlands under German occupation for several more months.
