1. The Film: Thank God It's Friday (1978)
Thank God It's Friday is a quintessential 1970s episodic musical comedy that attempts to capture the cultural phenomenon of the disco craze.
Plot Summary
The entire film takes place over the course of one Friday night at a high-energy Los Angeles disco called "The Zoo." The plot is intentionally thin, serving mostly as a framework to introduce and interweave the stories of various patrons and staff.
-
The Aspirant Star: Nicole Sims (Donna Summer in her film debut) is an aspiring singer desperately trying to convince the club's DJ, Bobby Speed, to play her demo record. Her storyline culminates in a triumphant, unplanned performance.
-
The Club Manager: Tony Di Marco (Jeff Goldblum in an early role) is the sleazy, narcissistic club owner obsessed with his car and trying to pick up women, including a married patron.
-
The Couples & Singles: The film follows several interconnected mini-plots: a married couple (Dave and Sue) whose anniversary dinner is interrupted by the club scene; two underage teenage girls (Frannie and Jeannie, played by Terri Nunn, later of the band Berlin) trying to sneak in to win the dance contest; and various dorky and cool singles (including a young Debra Winger) looking for love and a good time.
-
The Big Contest: Everyone is waiting for the arrival of the legendary group The Commodores, who are scheduled to perform for the club's major dance contest. The subplot of the roadie, "Wrong Way Floyd," struggling to deliver the band's instruments provides a running gag.
Significance
While the film itself was critically panned and often seen as a cheap cash-in on the success of Saturday Night Fever, it holds a high place as a time capsule of late-70s disco culture and is famous for launching Donna Summer's acting career and featuring early roles for Jeff Goldblum and Debra Winger.
2. The Music: The Soundtrack (NBLP-7099)
The Thank God It's Friday soundtrack is one of the biggest and most important disco compilations of the era. Released on Neil Bogart's Casablanca Records—the "home of disco"—it features the biggest stars of the genre.
Key Tracks & Musical Highlights
The LP is famous for featuring a sprawling collection of extended-length disco tracks, spanning three records and nearly 100 minutes of music.
Artist Track Title Significance Donna Summer "Last Dance" The centerpiece of the film and the soundtrack. It's famous for its slow start, transition into high-energy disco, and a final slow reprise. It won the Academy Award for Best Original Song in 1978. The Commodores "Too Hot Ta Trot" The Motown funk/disco group performing their hit live in the club as part of the film's climax. Donna Summer "With Your Love" A deeper, more sensual cut by the Queen of Disco. Diana Ross "Lovin', Livin' And Givin'" Another major Motown star contributing a sweeping disco track to the album. Love & Kisses "Thank God It's Friday" The main opening theme song, setting the high-energy tone of the film. Santa Esmeralda "Sevilla Nights" This group was known for mixing disco with Latin and flamenco rhythms, providing a spicy international flavor. Donna Summer "Je T'Aime (Moi Non Plus)" A lengthy, nearly 16-minute track that was a bonus inclusion on the third record of this triple-LP set (it was often released as a 12" single). The Role of Paul Jabara
Composer/singer Paul Jabara, who also played the character Carl in the film, was instrumental in the music. He wrote "Last Dance" specifically for Donna Summer's role in the film, and the song became his most enduring contribution to music history.
