·       ORIGINAL U.S. PRESSING

*** STILL SEALED GUARANTEED ORIGINAL FIRST 1954 CLEF MONO  PRESSING ***

·       THIS IS BY FAR THE OLDEST CONTINUOUSLY STILL FACTORY SEALED RECORD WE HAVE EVER OFFERED ON EBAY (OR, FOR THAT MATTER, EVER SEEN!): THIS STILL SEALED ALBUM IS NOW ROUGHLY 60 YEARS OLD.   PLEASE DON'T LET ANYONE EVER TELL YOU THAT FACTORY SEALING OF THE RECORDS STARTED ONLY IN THE EARLY 1960s, BECAUSE IT DEFINITELY, POSITIVELY, MOST CERTAINLY  DID NOT! IN ONE WAY OR ANOTHER, THE RECORDS WERE SEALED SINCE THE VERY FIRST MODERN 12" LP CAME OUT CIRCA 1950 (A NUMBER OF DIFFERENT SEALING METHODS WERE INITIALLY USED).  WHAT MAKES IT ABUNDANTLY CLEAR THAT THIS IS A FACTORY-SEALED ORIGINAL PRESSING IS THE PRESENCE OF THE SMALL CLEF FACTORY SEAL CERTIFICATION ( A SMALL 2 X 3" CLEF CARD), NEATLY ATTACHED TO THE BACK OF THE COVER, UNDERNEATH THE SHRINK WRAP .

·       GUARANTEED ORIGINAL BLACK CLEF LABEL WITH SILVER SCRIPT AND DAVID STONE MARTIN’S “TRUMPETER” LOGO (NO OTHER CLEF PRESSINGS EXIST)

·       GUARANTEED ORIGINAL DEEP GROOVE PRESSING (THERE ARE NO CLEF PRESSINGS WITHOUT THEM)

·       THE THICKNESS OF THE VINYL, THE APPEARANCE AND THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE COVER, LABEL’S LOGO AND OTHER PERIPHERAL ELEMENTS OF THE COVER, ARE ALL PERFECTLY CONSISTENT WITH THE ORIGINAL, FIRST PRESSING OF THIS TITLE.

·       THIS IS THE ORIGINAL, AUTHENTIC, FIRST U.S. PRESSING; THIS IS NOT A REISSUE, AN IMPORT, OR A COUNTERFEIT PRESSING.

·       ORIGINAL, THICK CARDBOARD COVER (AMERICAN STYLE)

·       ORIGINAL COVER ARTWORK BY DAVID STONE MARTIN

·       THICK, HEAVY VINYL PRESSING

Oscar Peterson is one of possibly two or three most important and influential Jazz Pianists in history. Falsely accused by hardcore Jazz collectors as being too "formal" "commercial", "conservative", "stiff" and "folksy" (somewhat akin to accusing Louis Armstrong or Duke Ellington of not being revolutionary enough), his ground-breaking work for Norman Granz nevertheless provided the backbone for the 50's Jazz - from Billie Holiday to Lester Young, and beyond - way beyond.

Within a one-month period in 1953, the Oscar Peterson Trio (with bassist Ray Brown and their new drummer Ed Thigpen) recorded ten (10) different Songbooks for the Norman Granz’s “Clef” label, dedicated to the works of some of the greatest American classical, modern, pop- and standards composers and songwriters of the 20th century These classic pieces of Americana  - as gloriously rendered by one of the greatest Jazz pianists – were released by Norman Granz at a slow, deliberate pace over the ensuing 24 months (1953-1955), in individual single-disc volumes dedicated to each composer, with a near-identical David Stone Martin cover artwork (only the background colors and album titles vary from title to title).

The classic “songbook” series by Oscar Peterson is one of the most popular Jazz editions in the history of the genre, with various reissues consistently available during the past fifty years (we counted at least six generations of reissues, starting with Verve/Clef series, down to MCI/UNIVERSAL compact discs). However, finding ORIGINAL pressings of the 1953-55 vintage on the original “Clef” label in good condition (let alone still sealed) is a mission impossible. Practically none of the surviving copies seem to have gracefully endured the ravages of time, and repeated, sometimes obsessive, playing by their owners.  We proudly present one such gorgeous specimen here, beautifully preserved and untouched by human hand! In addition, bidders should note that around 1959 Norman Granz’ new label (Verve) replaced the original cover artworks by David Stone Martin with a less memorable, drab, non-descript, pseudo-modernist color paintings on each volume. Original DSM covers have not been used for subsequent pressings since at least 1958.

·       CONDITION:

·       RECORD

(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we  grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)          THE ALBUM IS STILL FACTORY SEALED AND IS BELIEVED TO BE PERFECTLY MINT. Please note: sealed items are assumed to be mint and are sold as-is, as we have no way of inspecting them. For our policy on still sealed records ►click here (PLEASE READ BEFORE PLACING A BID)

(b)          The album comes with original Clef factory sealed certification card

(c)           The record is  apparently pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(d)          Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!
