THE ORNETTE COLEMAN TRIO - AT THE "GOLDEN CIRCLE" STOCKHOLM VOLUME 1

A VG+ copy of this original and rare 1965 first pressing US jazz classic on the coveted BLUE NOTE label, MONO, BLP 4224

The condition of the vinyl is VG+. A nice shine and sheen throughout with no obvious scuffs or wispy hairlines even, not even under a bright light. Remarkable! The only exceptions to this are a very small, light dint in the vinyl towards the beginning of side 1 which results in 11 light clicks during the MC's intro of the band, thus not impacting upon the audio quality at all. This 1960's Blue Note vinyl is renowned for both it's audio quality reproduction and durability and each are in plenty of evidence here.

The labels are EXCELLENT and would be excellent+ were it not for some faint, wispy age discolouration/ink smudging on the side 1 label (see photo). There's not even the usual faint spindle trails. Note the text "BLUE NOTE RECORDS INC. NEW YORK USA", again indicative of a very first pressing.

The non-laminated and thick cardboard outer sleeve is VG. There is some scuffing on each of the edges and corners, most noticeable on the top edge where there is also a 4cm split located at the top right hand corner. There is also a little surface rubbing on the front side and a small yellow stain above the word ornette (See photo). The reverse side is in very good shape with all writing clearly legible and no unwanted writing/names. 

Finally, the quality of the audio is an overall VG+. Great MONO tone and clarity with no distortion either at higher volume or on the higher frequencies. There is some mild background crackle at the beginning of each side which recurs intermittently (as very background) during a few of the quieter moments and I counted 11 mild background clicks right at the beginning of side 1 during the MC's intro. These audio blemishes are barely intrusive at all to the actual music, each track making for a great listen. Actually "Faces and Places" is simply mesmerising. A super listen throughout with musicians Ornette Coleman (alto sax, violin, trumpet), David Izenzon (bass), and Charles Moffett (drums) at the top of their game.

In summary, an impressive US BLUE NOTE mono first pressing of this rare 1965 jazz classic, with some blemishes but still highly presentable and a great listen.

On the subject of postage, I take great care in the packaging of all items, using a proper vinyl cardboard mailer along with at least two cardboard stiffeners. I take great care in removing the record from the outer sleeve in order to prevent sleeve damage in transit and I always insert the vinyl, outer sleeve and inner into a clear plastic sleeve, thus adding further protection.

Mint

Description: The record itself is in brand new condition with no surface marks or deterioration in sound quality. The cover and any extra items such as the lyric sheet, booklet or poster are in perfect condition. Records advertised as Sealed or Unplayed should be Mint.

Excellent

Description: The record shows some signs of having been played, but there is very little lessening in sound quality. The cover and packag­ing might have slight wear and/or creasing.

Very Good

Description: The record has obviously been played many times, but displays no major deterioration in sound quality, despite noticeable sur­face marks and the occasional light scratch. Normal wear and tear on the cover or extra items, without any major defects, is acceptable.

Good

Description: The record has been played so much that the sound quality has noticeably deteriorated, perhaps with some distortion and mild scratches. The cover and contents suffer from folding, scuffing of edges, spine splits, discoloration, etc.

Fair 

Description: The record is still just playable but has not been cared for prop­erly and displays considerable surface noise; it may even jump. The cover and contents will be torn, stained and/or defaced.

Poor

Description: The record will not play properly due to scratches, bad surface noise, etc. The cover and contents will be badly damaged or partly missing.

Bad

Description: The record is unplayable or might even be broken, and is only of use as a collection-filler.
