Description
An ORIGINAL copy of the 1979 Public Image Limited (PIL) legendary ‘post-punk’ classic limited edition “Metal Box”, which consists of 3 x 12" Vinyl Records played at 45 rpm, stored in a metal 'film canister' style container.
(METAL 1 serial number - see sticker on back of metal canister.
This beautiful set of vinyl records have experienced minimal play over the 45 years I have owned it, and are therefore understandably in Excellent condition for the age of the items.
Some people would I suspect classify the interior contents of the canister as Near Mint, but personally I prefer not to use such terms to describe a 45 year old item.
In the days when I purchased vinyl records I would tape them to cassette immediately to reduce use of the vinyl. That is perhaps why these vinyl records have no nasty fingermarks upon them or horrible scratches.
The solitary issue I discovered today when playing the discs for the first time since 1979 is that at the very end of the song “Poptones” the stylus seemed to ‘stick’ and cause the last few seconds of the song to repeat. No idea why but the issue never arose in 1979. Today, I simply lifted the arm and placed it down for the following song “Careering”.
These vinyl records famously came in a circular metal 'film canister' type container. As with every other metal copy of “Metal Box” album, the external metal shows blemishes - signs of the fully-anticipated oxidation of the metal. Looking at my copy, I suspect there are a lot less blemishes on the canister exterior than on many copies I see being auctioned on here. Perhaps that’s because my copy has been kept in a cardboard container since 1979, and has resided in a smoke-free, pet-free home the entire time. It occasionally comes out to show to friends but I didn't play them the vinyl.
The interior of the metal canister I would classify as Excellent. It has NONE of the blemishing that you routinely see on other 45 year old copies, as my photographs will testify.
I would therefore overall classify the metal canister to be in Very Good + condition for its age.
The vinyl records I would classify as in Excellent condition, with the proviso made above regarding the ’sticking’ and ‘repeating’ at the very end of one track.
The paper inserts are ALL originals, in Excellent condition, showing no evidence of ageing, yellowing or browning. The inserts that protect and separate these records are thin circular paper dividers that fully cover the discs but are NOT the standard interior sleeves that traditionally contained vinyl records, precisely because of the circular design.
