Description
Oranges & Lemons is the 11th studio album and the second double album by the English band XTC, released 27 February 1989 on Virgin Records in the U.K. and a day later in the U.S. on Geffen Records. It is the follow-up to 1986's Skylarking. In general, the music is characterized as a 1980s update of 1960s psychedelia; the album is primarily pop and rock, although a variety of other styles are plundered throughout, such as jazz, reggae, hard rock, Middle Eastern music and Zairean soukous. 12 of the album's 15 tracks were written by guitarist Andy Partridge, with the rest by bassist Colin Moulding.
FUN FACT: The cover art was intended to resemble the work of Heinz Edelmann, the art director for the 1968 film Yellow Submarine.
Oranges & Lemons received critical acclaim and became the band's highest-charting album since 1982's English Settlement, rising to number 28 in the UK and number 44 in the US. Lead single "Mayor of Simpleton", a jangle pop song, reached number 46 on the UK Singles Chart and number 72 on the Billboard Hot 100, making it their only US single to chart. It was followed with "King for a Day" (number 11 on the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks) and "The Loving" (no chart showing).
THIS COPY is an Allied 1st pressing from 1989 on the Geffen Records label (see Notes, below). I notice that the description of this release mentions an embossed "A" appearing on the first two sides; this copy does not have that, but since all of the runout inscriptions match exactly, I believe this must be the correct pressing.
The vinyl has some marks, but per a test listen, none seem to affect playback. Overall, the vinyl is in Very Good Plus [VG+] condition.
The original cover is in Very Good Plus [VG+] or better condition.
Both of the original inner sleeves really are in Exellent [EX] condition, like new.

Issued in non-gatefold jacket, with printed inner sleeves with lyrics/photos.
"A" embossed around the center spindle hole on sides A and B indicates Allied Record Company pressing. – NOT found on this copy.
