Johnny Winter And / Ten Wheel Drive: P-12173 / P-12174
AFRTS (Armed Forces Radio & Television Service) RL 13-1, 1971
Vietnam War era radio program for the exclusive entertainment of deployed GI’s. Approved and manufactured by the U.S. Department of Defense. New selections were distributed on a weekly basis, for several years. So for any given year there were 52 different "Top Pops" LPs (with a varied collection of current chart hits) and 52 different supplemental "P" compilations (like this one, providing samples of newly-released LPs).
The estimated initial press run for this sort of release is approximately 100 copies, give or take … and many don’t remain. Some sources say these records were simply thrown away at the end of the week, when new playlists arrived. So yes, SUPER RARE these days.
Brings to mind Good Morning, Vietnam…rockin' from the Delta to the DMZ!
Also, for all you vinyl purists out there, all AFRTS records are presented in MONO.
Broadcast through short-range FM airwaves, there was never a need to master these in stereo.
This one is a hard blues-rocking, very-electric, post-psychedelic jam-band showdown, and a two-artist split.
Based on a bit of online research, it has never been offered for sale before. This might be the only copy in existence!
• Side A is a selection of songs from Johnny Winter And ?(Columbia / C 30221 / 1970 / see reference pic above for original album cover art). At the time, "Johnny Winter And" was the grammatically-severed name of Winter’s eponymous band. This selection of songs includes that timeless cut of prime beef, 'Rock and Roll Hootchie Koo' (it ain’t the more-famous Derringer version from the latter '70s, but it works just the same!).
• Side B includes songs from the Ten Wheel Drive LP, Brief Replies ?(Polydor 24-4024 / 1970 / see reference pic above for original album cover art). This group featured wild-throated Genya Ravan on vox, clearly emulating the savage glass-shattering banshee wails of her stylistic contemporary, Janis Joplin.
Labels read "U.S. Government property – Use or reproduction for private or commercial purposes prohibited."

Vinyl: VG (a few scuffs, but vinyl personally cleaned and play-graded … not bad … medium background noise … not annoying … very decent)

GRADING
Usually, VG++ is as high as you’ll see me go.
Near Mint is rare, usually play-test verified, and MINT is reserved for sealed items.
