The marketing minds at All Platinum/Stang Records released an album with tracks by the O'Jays and the Moments and dubbed it: The O'Jays Meet the Moments. The Moments recorded for the label in question, the O'Jays did not. Some of the O'Jays sides were cut in Cleveland for Saru Records, and a couple were produced by George Kerr. This was pre-"Backstabbers," when the O'Jays were a quartet comprising Eddie LeVert, Walter Williams, William Powell, and Bobby Massey. The Moments were Al Goodman, Billy Brown, and Harry Ray. "Peace" by the O'Jays proved that they recorded socially significant songs before Gamble & Huff; William Powell introduces the song in a chilly falsetto, and Eddie LeVert takes it home exhorting about the world's woes. "Baby You Move Me" provides a good vehicle for LeVert to display his vocal prowess. "Don't You Know a True Love" has the O'Jays doing some unusual backing fills to LeVert's lead. Walter Williams fronts the remaining two O'Jays selections in his resonant baritone; both are lilting, midtempo numbers. The Moments sides are more satisfying. The energetic "Sugar, Sugar" should have charted; Harry Ray leads the toe-tapper, which is unusual, since he rarely cut fast numbers. Towards the end, the horns, Ray's lead, and Brown's and Goodman's vocals play against each other for some moving vibes. "Ride Your Pony" was probably too risque for 1974; Goodman's bass tones are heard explaining the situation until Harry Ray in his best "hey sexy mama" voice sings to some lady about riding the "pony." Billy Brown leads "What's Your Name," a nice if unspectacular tune that received a few spins on the R&B stations but failed to click with the masses. Jesus Alvarez composed the other two Moments offerings: the mystical "Merry Go Round" and the light-hearted, bubbly "Meeting You Was No Mistake," both led by Harry Ray.
