Description
Internationally-renowned photographer O. Winston Link chronicled, in picture and sound, the Norfolk and Western Railway's last years of steam railroading as it became the last major railroad in the United States to switch from steam to diesel. His first two volumes, "Sounds of Steam Railroading" and "The Fading Giant" remain classics sixty years after being released. His next disc, "Thunder on Blue Ridge," was his first stereo recording. "The Fading Giant" concludes with what is arguably his most memorable recording, made on Christmas Eve 1957, as peaceful Christmas carols from church chimes are interrupted by a passenger train whistling in the distance. The carols continues as the train arrives for a quick stop at a small station, and are heard over the departure of the powerful locomotive and its throaty whistle.
The jacket for "Thunder on Blue Ridge" has a stick-on label in the upper left-hand corner, which I haven't tried to remove for fear of tearing the picture. The jackets on all records might also need tape. Some have slight stains, but not enough to detract from the pictures or liner notes.
Vanishing Vapor, from the 470 Railroad Club, features recordings of Mogul and Pacific-class locomotives along the Boston and Maine during the 1950s. The recordings were originally made in mono, but this record is presented in simulated stereo. Perhaps the most unusual excerpt on this disc is a Morse Code message, circa 1954, concerning a malfunctioning diesel locomotive.
The final LP, "Railroad Sounds - Steam and Diesel," released by Audio Fidelity in approx. 1958, provides exciting stereo listening. Unfortunately it doesn't mention the types of locomotives heard, nor are the locations included in the notes.
All five albums appear to be quite playable, considering their age. Will ship via USPS Media Mail, but will only ship within the continental United States. Buy agrees to pay for shipping. No refunds or returns accepted.
