Description

This item is a 7" single of recordings of the American steam locomotive, the General - it was issued in New York on the O. Winston Link Railway Productions label . This is number 5 in a series of sought-after recordings made by renowned steam photographer and archivist O. Winston Link and was the only one released on 7". It is in a gatefold sleeve - the interior has a black-and-white photograph and 'History and Details of the Steam Locomotive General' which is apparently 'the oldest operating steam locomotive in America' (Has this locomotive been running since the Civil War? Is this the same engine featured in the classic Buster Keaton film? My ignorance of American steam history knows no limits...) . The record is in fantasic condition having clearly been little played - it looks as though it left the shop yesterday...I know little about the history of steam locomotives and recordings of them, but I know a fair bit about grading and selling vinyl - check out my feedback for other records I have sold. The front of the sleeve is lovely and glossy. The top of the part of the gatefold sleeve into which the record is inserted is split fairly neatly for about 4". The spine of the sleeve has wear top and bottom and, sadly, at some time liquid has been spilt on the back of the sleeve - there is staining and patches missing where it has been separated from something else. Most of the information on 'The General's Specifications' has, unfortunately, been torn away.

Apparently this record was originally issued in 1962 - I bought it as part of a job lot of 7"'s from the same period so I believe it dates from about then. A sought-after item possibly about fifty years old, a 7" in fantastic condition with a great starting price - this item would make a great addition to the collection of anyone interested in the history of steam locomotives.
