Formed late in 1977, 'O' Level were among the first (and definitely among the best)
outfits to emerge out of the D.I.Y. revolution which followed the release of the first single by the Desperate Bicycles. the line-up was identical to that of The Television Personalities.
this early, pre-Television Personalities single featuring Ed Ball and John & Gerrard Bennett. Classic DIY punk release presented here in the ‘schoolboy’ sleeve (honestly don’t know which sleeve design is the ‘rarest’ – they were probably all pressed in the same numbers!). Anyhow, this homemade sleeve is in great condition and the vinyl’s not far behind.
The sleeve is the original folded sheet sellotaped on to a plain white inner. Not sure why the top and bottom edges were serrated (like the edges of an old brown paper bag) but considering the whole thing’s fragile nature, it’s survived incredibly well. There’s NO scribbles, no tears or rips, no nasty creasing, no stains or residue. The tape has browned over time (inevitable) and has come away from the rear side of the foldover. Light label ring impression (near invisible) but no other faults/signs of age. An unusual DIY sleeve which has stood the test of time brilliantly (even the serrated edge is mainly sharp). So at least worthy of a proper EX (Excellent) in my book.
Recorded in November 1977 at I.P.S. Studios, London, and issued in may 1978 on psycho records, the 7" featured two primitively thrilling amateur-punk anthems, plus a third short cut entitled 'O' Levels, uncredited on labels or sleeve...(from Mario Panciera "(1976/1979) 45 Revolutions" book)This was one of their only two singles released and the only record made by Psycho Records. Side two of this release has the extra song “O LEVELS”.
