Description

Dotty's Records, which issued such legendary Northern 45s as Johnny Hampton, Carol Anderson on Whip, and Gail Nevels, disappeared in a flash in 1967 when Detroit police raided the offices, arrested owner Clarence Marshall on drug trafficking charges, confiscated everything in the building (none of which was ever to be seen again), and padlocked the door.  As a result, no Dotty's-related memorabilia has ever come up for public sale.

This is a hand-typed, one-page document that I obtained about 10 years ago from a former Dotty's employee.  It looks like a carbon copy, which would make sense, given that they were probably sending the document to any number of different promoters and venues in an attempt to find gigs for their artists.  It's on Lynn's Productions letterhead, a booking agency of Allen White's with which Clarence Marshall and Dotty's had a close relationship.  One of the coolest things about this document is that it bills Johnny Hampton as "Johnny Carter," the name under which he frequently performed, while listing both sides of the Dotty's single he recorded under the name Hampton.  (The artist's real name was neither Johnny Hampton nor Johnny Carter, but Freddie Burr.)  It also includes mention of Ed Crook.  A great one-of-a-kind piece of Detroit soul history.
