You might know 'em as Bob Dylan's backin' band during the soul grindin' tour of 65/66. But, Levon Helm, Garth Hudson, Rick Danko, Robbie Robertson and Richard Manuel weren't always known as The Band. Before their dusty tumbler debut of sounds, namely, Music From Big Pink, they went through a few name changes.

Today we wanted to focus our rock 'n roll stethoscopes on a rollickin' blaze of rock n' soul from when The Band was called Levon & The Hawks. B-Side, "He Don't Love You (And he'll Break Your Heart)" is an echo filled, sudderin' stomper that does, indeed, groove. Originally released in 1965, this track is, hands down, the best that the group recorded as the Hawks. Richard is singin' the lead and all The Band's trademark stamps are there: echoin' drums, instrumental spacin', dirty bass, freewheelin' organ and piano. And, of course, an infectious bite.
