Nora Dean: Greedy Boy b/w
Keith: Please Stay
Gas Records; GAS 165, 1971.
Nora Dean (1944 – 2016) released a steady flow of singles between the mid-1960s and the later 1970s before disappearing from view for a while. She re-emerged in the 1980s as a performer of lovers rock and again in the 1990s as a gospel singer. Her biggest hit and best-remembered single is probably Barbwire released in 1970.
As well as releasing solo records in her own name, Nora recorded a number of other singles as a member of the Ebony Sisters, the Soul Sisters and the Soulettes. Her solo records were released on numerous Jamaican and British reggae labels including Upsetter, Harry J, Jackpot, Punch and Horse. As you can see, this single was released on Gas, one of a number of small labels that sprang up in London in the late sixties and early seventies, releasing blue beat, ska and reggae into the British market. Gas was a subsidiary of Pama.
A number of Nora’s records – this one is a good example – were very frankly concerned with sexual behaviour and female sexuality. Of course, in most cases, Jamaican records released in the UK at that time, sold only to a relatively small number of specialist buyers. Many of the most exciting and interesting records sold few copies and can now be very scarce.
This example of Greedy Boy is in decent condition. It has quite a lot of surface lines and marks to both sides but it plays cleanly. There are a couple of clicks audible at the very beginning of the A-side but otherwise there is no audible intrusion into the music. The B-side also plays well although it does have a little light crackling in places. I’ve no idea by the way, who “Keith”, the featured artist on the B-side, is. The very reasonable start price for this scarce record reflects the fact that the condition is not perfect.
The labels are in very nice, bright condition indeed, as you can see.

I hope this description has given you enough to go on but should you require any further information, or more images, please do e-mail. Please also look carefully at the hi-res photos – they are part of the description. Thanks for your interest in this auction and good luck if you decide to bid.
Please note: I will not respond to requests to close the auction early regardless of the value of the offer made. Ending early is contrary to both the principle and spirit of an auction. It is also unfair to other eBayers who may be watching the auction intending to bid at a later time.
