Nic Jones - Penguin Eggs, Topic Records 12TS411

Unbelievably good. This is one the greatest British folk albums ever; right up there with Rosemary Lane, Liege & Lief or Please to See the King. Using songs gathered from his travels - physically, emotionally - Jones assembles these folk gems with the love of a nested bird feeding her young, hence the title itself takes on such resonance. As a guitarist, Jones's plucking is assured, never arrogant or "look at me if you want to do it right", his motivation is only to share; as a singer, that English folk twang is evocative of sea-washed coasts and bearded men raising their pint glasses for fallen fishermen. Kate Rusby's blessing (apparently her favourite album of all time) is a fine tribute to a fine body of performances, her own work tinted with shades of standout piece 'The Humpback Whale'.
