New Gold Dream - Half Speed by SIMPLE MINDS.

Rating:

Tracks:
Someone Somewhere in Summertime 4:37
Colours Fly and Catherine Wheel Voice [Girl's] - Sharon Campbell 3:48
Promised You a Miracle Drums - Kenny Hyslop 4:25
Big Sleep 4:58
Somebody Up There Likes You 4:56
New Gold Dream (81-82-83-84) 5:38
Glittering Prize 4:33
Hunter and the Hunted Keyboards [Solo] - Herbie Hancock 5:53
King Is White and in the Crowd 6:59

Performer Notes:

  • Simple Minds: Kerr (vocals); Burchill (guitar, saxophone); MacNeil (keyboards); Forbes (fretless bass); McGee (drums, percussion).
  • Additional personnel: Herbie Hancock (keyboards).
  • Simple Minds began their career indebted to Roxy Music, David Bowie and Magazine, but over successive releases emerged as a distinctive act. On New Gold Dream the group's ambitions came to full fruition, the awkward dissonance of early recordings replaced by a warm, textured sound. The content ranged from brash stadium rock to melodic ballad, but a singleness of purpose ensured such contrasts enhanced the set's overall cohesion. The quintet had never sounded so confident or assured and the resultant lush textures launched them into the international arena, fulfilling their undoubted promise. On "Promised You A Miracle," did Kerr really sing "guinea pigs are guinea pigs?"

Professional Reviews: Q (2/04, p.117) - 4 stars out of 5 - "[T]he title track thrillingly evoking Bowie's 'Station To Station' and 'Someone Somewhere' rivaling U2 for elegant rock dynamics."

Uncut (1/03, p.97) - Included in Uncut's "100 Best Albums of the Year"

Uncut (11/02, p.139) - 5 stars out of 5 - "...Their masterpiece...its teetering, auric grace is undiminished..."

CMJ (1/5/04, p.12) - Ranked #8 in CMJ's "Top 20 Most-Played Albums of 1983".
