The New Christs - Distemper, Citadel CGAS 807 CREDITS INNER
The New Christs released this gem at the very tail end of the eighties.
Rob Younger is a legend, with his work with Radio Birdman and the New Race amongst others, I reckon this is his best release ever despite the pedigree of his former bands. On this album he works with Jim Dickson (ex Barracudas) on bass, Nick Fisher on drums, Charlie Owen guitar and Louis Tillet (ex Wet Taxis) on piano/organ. What a team to bring the song visions to fruition.
There's heaps of angst in this creation. Also alot of good rock'n'roll with a couple of depressing odes with a definite smack influence. Younger dredges up alot of deep emotions out of his soul, mainly around relationship hassles and women in general. The guys' got alot of guts and on this album he lets it all out, especially on 'Bed Of Nails' where at the end, he reaches into his battered soul, dragging the listener down into the centre of male horrorshow uglieness that most wimps try hard to avoid, coz it hurts way too much. Youngers' a guy that's been burnt, not once but again and again, or so he wants us to believe.
The faster songs have a ring of quality about them which holds the album together throughout. This album is a consistent and confident refection and captures a band hitting the peak at precisely the right time. The album features a distorted fun fair creature on the cover and that odd influence comes through like some deja vu childhood memory. There's also a Sydney surf element floating through the whole album. I dunno, but anything with Younger's paw prints on it is bound to contain some kind of timeless quality to it. The guys a legend, what more can I say?
Best Australian album release of the eighties!!!
