Nellie Melba (born Richmond Victoria in 1861, and died Darlinghurst NSW in 1931) was considered Australia’s, and the world’s greatest opera singer.  This 1982 boxed set, was compiled in conjunction with RCA Australia and the Australian Broadcasting Commission (now Australian Broadcasting Corporation) and released to coincide with the 50th Anniversary of the ABC in 1982.  Nellie Melba made 73 recordings for the Victor Talking Company of New York and New Jersey, and of those 73, 61 are still known to be in existence, and they are all included on this boxed set.  Housed in a stunning box, with hinged lid, this collection also contains a booklet with extensive rare photographs, historical notes, recording details and includes an introductory letter by Dame Joan Sutherland and Richard Bonynge.  A second booklet is also included, which is a programme from the 1983 Victorian Arts Centre exhibition titled ‘Nellie Melba – The Legend Still Lives’, which was an exhibition of Melba’s personal possessions – costumes and jewellery worn during her career.  The Box and booklets are all in excellent condition.  Vinyl LP’s are all in excellent condition and all feature replica Victor labels.  This is an incredible historical collection of sound recordings from Nellie Melba, and considering the era and recording techniques when these recordings were made (1907-1916), one can only wonder in amazement as to what Nellie Melba’s voice must have sounded like live in concert, and indeed what these recordings might sound like if today’s recording studios had been available – VRL5 0365
