Description
These are used copies of Neil Young's first eight (8) solo albums that are all being sold as is. I am the original owner of all eight LP's, which are all first editions purchased at the time of the initial release, with the exception of Zuma, which is a reissue, purchased new in 2014.
I am a Buffalo Springfield fan and I purchased LP's by all former members (solo and group) as they were released, including Stephen Stills; Bruce Palmer, Dewey Martin, Richie Furay, and Jim Messina.
The vinyl and covers are in varying conditions, which are listed below next to the respective LP. In grading these LP's, I am using the Goldmine Grading Guide as a reference, and where unsure about the proper grade I will use a range of two sequential grades, which will mean that I likely believe that it belongs to the higher of the two grades, but I will err on the side of caution and present the possibility that it could be the lower of the two grades.
I will assign a grade to each side (listed as 1 and 2) of the vinyl as in a couple of instances, one side is better, having less surface noise, than the other. None of the vinyl has any consequential scratches or scuffs, and on the whole the vinyl is in remarkable condition for their age and for having survived college roommates with low vinyl-handling skills.
I also have all of the inserts that came with many of these albums, and these are all included in this auction.
I am also including in this auction a copy of The Ohio State University flyer regarding his November 18, 1973 concert with Grin at Mershon Auditorium as well as the ticket stub for my front row seat. It was an interesting concert, beginning with Young’s first name being misspelled as “Neal” on the ticket. (Due to the 12 photo limit I am not able to include photos of these items in the listing, but will be happy to message upon request.)
What was truly noteworthy was that the stage set was identical to the one seen on the cover of “Tonight’s The Night” and in addition to older standards, Young performed the whole of “Tonight’s The Night” and said it would be his next album and would be released the following summer (1974). However, the album that was actually released on July 16, 1974 was “On The Beach.” “Tonight’s The Night” was not released until June 20, 1975, over 1 ½ years following his performance of the album at Mershon.
There was some slight water damage due to flooding from Tropical Storm Allison in 2001 to the covers of a couple of the albums, but overall there is only normal wear and tear for album covers of their age. I will be happy to provide individual photos of the covers, vinyl and the inserts that came with some of the albums.
As a point of reference I listened to each of these albums—all songs, both sides—prior to listing, so that I would be able to grade them as accurately as possible. All albums were played on my custom plinth Rega turntable that is somewhere between a RP3 and a RP6 with a Sumiko Blue Point cartridge and stylus. The receiver used was a JVC R-S77 that was connected to and run through a pair of Kvart & Bolge Sound Sommeliers and a pair of Wharfedale Diamond 10.1 bookshelf speakers. This is a fairly sensitive system that hides little in the way of scratches, scuffs, wear or surface noise.
