Some album covers are pretty.
Zuma is not one of them.
It’s a black-and-white fever dream: a naked woman and a long-beaked bird sailing past a pyramid, snow-capped mountains, sun and moon both hanging in the sky like they couldn’t decide whose turn it was.
Drawn by Neil Young’s friend James “Mazz” Mazzeo, the image started as a rough sketch built on Neil’s loose vision of “a bird flying women over the desert, pyramids and stuff” — a kind of time-travel postcard from some other civilization. Mazz created multiple versions; Neil grabbed the roughs and said, essentially, these are finished, and that raw, unpolished version became the cover.
Critics have called it everything from “cruddy lunacy” to one of the greatest, weirdest covers in rock history. Fans still argue in late-night threads about whether it’s “bad art” or the only image that could ever possibly sit in front of “Cortez the Killer” and “Danger Bird.” Either way, nobody forgets it.
Mazzeo didn’t just draw Zuma; he helped shape Neil’s creative universe for decades (Greendale stage design, art direction, and more).

It's also signed on the back by Mazzeo and titled "ZumALong."
