Originally formed in Tampa, Florida in 1987 by drummer/vocalist Mike Browning (formerly of Morbid Angel), Nocturnus are often regarded as one of the pioneering (or literal first ever) progressive death metal acts. Known for their sci-fi leaning lyrics and extensive use of keyboards and synthesisers, the band's take on futuristic horror and more cosmic aesthetics was a far cry from the early brutality of the scene and would predate modern acts of a similar vein such as Blood Incantation by decades. Science Of Horror offers a vinyl rehoming of the band's first primitive demo with many of the cuts featured serving as early versions of tracks that would appear on their much-lauded 1990 debut full-length The Key. Somewhat lo-fi in nature, with a notable absence of the synth-laden textures that would become an integral aspect of their future sound, this fresh reissue of a long overlooked demo balances delicately on the precipice between the classic death metal aura and the myriad of expansive directions the scene would soon have as options to wander.
