Description

Rare Test pressing  (Philips Recording Company/Pressing) was a major U.S. vinyl pressing plant, primarily operating in Richmond, Indiana (PRC-Richmond) and Compton, California (PRC-West) from the 1970s to the 1990s, known for manufacturing records for many labels, identifiable by "PRC" or "PRC-W" in the dead wax, with the Indiana plant later becoming part of Cinram. They were crucial in the vinyl boom, producing records for major labels like  with their pressings often praised for sound quality.  Key Locations & History:

  • PRC Richmond (Indiana): Evolved from the historic plant, operating as PRC from the early 70s until sold to Cinram in 1990.
  • PRC West (Compton, CA): A secondary plant opened in 1976 to meet vinyl demand, closing in 1984 with the rise of CDs. 
Identification Marks (Dead Wax):
  • PRC-Richmond: "PRC" etched in the runout groove, sometimes with an "RI" code on the label.
  • PRC-West: "PRC-W" in the dead wax. 
Significance:
  • A major player in pressing vinyl for numerous record labels during the late vinyl era.
