It's Daytona Beach, Florida in 1964. Wells, Thomason and Rouse were in band at school called The Group, whose guitarist George Brown had recently moved to the area from Louisville, Kentucky, where he'd been in a band called the NightCrawlers. When they graduated to college in the fall, the trio decided to start another band and connected with Charles "Chuck" Conlan. Conlan had been playing folk in a group called The Craftsmen and was already writing and doing demos for Lee Hazen's National Songwriters Guild. He knew drummer Tommy Ruger and got him into the group.

So began The Nightcrawlers, who are best remembered for the haunting and cryptic folk-rocker Little Black Egg which personifies their sound - a sultry garage version of the Beau Brummels, with their plaintive Searchers-like melodies and a hint at the Stones' shake and rattle in the more upbeat material. Little Black Egg became a local hit and the band got plenty of gigs. Live most of the songs featured Rob Rouse on lead vocals and they performed more upbeat and soulful material, whereas Conlan sang lead on his compositions in the studio with Rouse or Thomason on harmonies. When Kapp picked up on the band they pushed to get more material out of a band that was raw but had obvious hit potential. Little Black Egg was re-released and started picking up in other regions; it would be pushed for a third time and eventually hit the Billboard charts in early 1967, long after the original band who recorded it had split.

In fact Conlan had been fired by the band in early 1966 - his heart was less with band rehearsals than with a young lady. He was replaced by Bob Keller from The Allman Joys. Kapp were still pushing for follow-ups but the band already knew that they'd be splitting for college in the summer of 1966 and were not willing to be pushed around by producer Brad Shapiro. In the event, they split in June 1966.

Shortly after Wells and Thomason decided they wanted to get another band together but Kapp insisted on them forming a new Nightcrawlers if they wanted to record again. Eventually, they were persuaded by their friend and "6th member" Mike Stone to reform (line-up 'C' above). This band went on tour and the album was released despite the fact that the band's sound had moved on considerably since the material it showcased. Mike Stone would keep the band going through numerous personnel changes until 1970 when it became Orion.

Meantime, Conlan had enrolled at the University of Miami. In 1967 he signed up with Henry Stone and released two 45s in 1967 as "Conlan and The Crawlers". He went on to work with The Birdwatchers, producing Girl I Got News For You, and had songs covered by the Proctor Amusement Co.

The Little Black Egg has come to be regarded by many as a '60s classic and has been featured on More Nuggets (CD), Nuggets Box (4-CD), Nuggets, Vol. 6 (LP) and Excerpts From Nuggets (CD). It remains popular to this day and has been frequently covered by a varity of bands including Music Explosion, Margins (on the 1966 Columbus, Ohio Hillside Promotion LP), The Kommotions, Tonebenders (Northland 3rd Annual Battle Of The Bands, 1967 2-LP), Neighb'rhood Childr'n (Long Years In Space retrospective), Bourbons (House Party CD which also features a cover of A Basket Of Flowers), later still by The Cars and also 90's/00's bands like The Others (from Italy) and Seattle's Minus 5 (with REM's Peter Buck). A Basket Of Flowers has also been covered by the Last Words (1968 s/t Atco LP), and by the Cynics (1988 LP, Twelve Flights Up). Finally, If You Want My Love was revived by The Lyres in 1986 on their Lyres Lyres LP.

Jimmy Pitman was also a briefly member at some point, prior to moving to LA and joining The Strawberry Alarm Clock.
